Below is a list of four fruits that are touted as ‘super fruits’ and an explanation as to what makes them so special.
Super Fruit #1: Acai Berry

Acai berries are the fruits from the Acai Palm tree which is native to Central and South America. Acai is quickly becoming popular in the diets of health foodies worldwide and it is touted for its ability to boost the metabolism, enhance weight loss, prevent disease and increase sports performance. Not only is it low in sugar, it also tastes good, with a taste that resembles a combination of red wine and chocolate. Some studies have found that acai is higher in antioxidants than strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and cranberries; and the acai berry is a particularly potent source of the powerful antioxidant – anthocyanins. According to a study published in Agricultural Communications Journal (2008, October 6), the antioxidants in acai are easily absorbed in the body and the consumption of Acai fruits (both in juice and pulp form) results in significant levels of anthocyanins in the blood, within 12 hours of intake. This is significant because preliminary studies have found that anthocyanins can scavenge free radicals.

Super Fruit # 2: Noni Fruits

Noni fruits grow on noni trees in the Pacific Islands; and they are considered functional foods with immense healing powers, amongst the Polynesian population. Noni juice is made by fermenting the noni fruits, and it is sold in health food stores across North America. Noni juice contains a variety of vitamins and minerals and it is high in the following antioxidant-dense phytonutrients: saponins, triterpenes, steroids, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides. The study conducted on rats, found that the consumption of noni juice for 20 days resulted in a reduction in blood sugar levels that was comparable to the reduction obtained from diabetes medication. Adding the juice of noni fruits to the rats diets also reduced liver damage and fatty deposits, which are two problems associated with diabetes. Finally, preliminary research suggests that noni juice can help protect against stress-induced cognitive impairment, and promote both digestive and intestinal health.

Super Fruit #3: Goji Berries

Goji berries are native to Asia, and they have a long history of use as health promoting functional foods in traditional Chinese Medicine. You can buy dried goji berries or goji berry juice in North America and they taste similar to dried cranberries. Goji fruits are high in antioxidants and they are nutritionally dense, containing: beta-carotene, Vitamin C, B-vitamins, iron and amino acids. Goji berries are considered particularly helpful at boosting the immune system and protecting against the oxidative stress that is caused by environmental pollutants. According to a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, goji fruits appear to increase gastrointestinal function, enhance feelings of general wellbeing, increase energy, improve athletic performance, enhance mental acuity and increase quality of sleep.

Super Fruits #4: The Common Berry

Although acai, noni and goji fruits are indeed super fruits, containing a variety of potent antioxidants, they are not as accessible as the common berries — strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries, which can easily be obtained fresh, frozen or dried at nearly any grocery store in North America. These berries are not only delicious; they are also low in calories, high in fiber and water, and packed with vitamin C, antioxidants and flavonoids. Studies have found that the polyphenols found in these berries promote overall health. Adding these berries to our diets, can also help to prevent oxidative stress, reduce inflammation.

Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer.For example, results have shown that individuals with blue eyes are much less likely to develop vitiligo, while people with brown eyes are more likely to develop the affliction and its characteristic white patches of skin and hair.


Vitiligo and Your Immune System
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s immune system attacks normal pigment cells, causing irregular white patches of skin and hair. People with vitiligo are also at higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases like autoimmune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.
The study, which was published in Nature Genetics showed followed 450 people with and without the skin disease, taking into account their eye colour. The group was selected randomly out of a pool of 3,200 Americans of non-Hispanic European ancestry.
The analysis identified 13 new genes that predispose people to vitiligo, and the results showed a significantly lower percentage of people with blue or gray eyes and a higher percentage of people with brown eyes had vitiligo.
Results showed that among the people with vitiligo:

  • 27% had blue or gray eyes (compared with over half of Americans of European descent without the condition)
  • 43% had tan or brown eyes vs. 27%.
  • 30% had green or hazel eyes vs. 22%.

What is likely most strange about this study, is that researchers say the abnormal immune response associated with vitiligo may have effects in lowering the risk of melanoma.

Some Interesting Facts on Vitiligo
Many people with vitiligo can feel depressed and start lacking confidence because of their white spots. Due to the intense mental stress felt among patients with vitiligo, there are a number of therapies available. The most proven techniques out of these are UV therapy and supplemental treatments.
There has been some success using light treatments. There are people who have used UVB lamps that have re-claimed pigmentation. There are also home lamps available that can eliminate the hassle of having to go to expensive UV light therapy sessions.

But now, researchers have devised a way to make computer touchscreens out of paper, which is lightweight, flexible and cheap.

Use of paper touchscreens could range from electronic devices to nutritional labels & price tags.

The paper, created by a team of researchers led by Aaron Mazzeo, a mechanical engineer at Harvard, starts with a process already used to make shiny labels for beer bottles: Paper is coated with a very thin layer of aluminum, which is then covered in a thin film of transparent polymer, Discovery News reported.

“We are interested in designing systems that use low cost materials to provide high-tech functionality,” said Mazzeo.

Aluminum conducts electrical charges. Putting two sheets of the metallic paper next to each makes a capacitor, a device that stores an electrical charge.

With the help of an external circuit, the metallized material becomes a surface that can detect charges. When a person touches the paper layer, the amount of charge in the paper goes up - just like it does on a glass or plastic touchscreen.

To build a keyboard, the researchers used a laser to etch cuts into the metal-coated paper.

The paper is fairly cheap, approximately 25 cents per square meter, which implies that a nine-digit keypad the size of those on a calculator could be made for a few cents.
