Default Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa

Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa beat out the other films to be the top grossing film this past weekend. It's no wonder Madagascar 2 was the top film this weekend, with amazing animation, lovable characters, filled with jokes and zingers, the second installment of this animated tale highlighting our favorite New York Zoo animals is a pleasure for the whole family.

You would be hard pressed to pick a favorite character in this movie simply because there are so many and you love them all. This really is a star-studded cast! The four main characters Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) are trying to leave Madagascar in the plane that the Penguins have rebuilt and accidentally land in Africa where their next adventure begins. The Penguins are hilarious as plotting, scheming mechanic-mobsters and continue to be a fan favorite. Also from the first film, we have King Julien (Sascha Baron Cohen) and his sidekick Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer) who will have you in stitches. King Julien's kooky voice and silly mannerisms will have you smiling or laughing every time he is on screen. The King has the best one-liners in the film - so watch and listen for them. He tells the other animals he is coming on the plane with them, and he even has "scissors and hand cream."

New to the adventure are the animals we find in Africa. In '2' we meet Zuba (the late, great Bernie Mac) who plays Alex's father, King of the Pride. Zuba's nemesis is a scheming lion named Makunga, voiced by Alec Baldwin, complete with swooping black hair. Others contributing their voices to the film are Will.i.am, Andy Richter, and Quinn Dempsey Stiller as baby Alex. It is truly amazing how the characters come to life and actually look like their actors. Makunga (Baldwin) is the best example of this as he schemes and plots to take over the pride. The movie moves quickly and will have you captivated and laughing.

Writter Ethan Cohen does a wonderful job of catering to both adults and children by varying the jokes and using both high and low (and sometimes middle) brow humor. Even though '2' is a comedy, the story line has a point and, of course, a moral, so everyone can learn something from it. Some of the humor might be lost on the little ones, but everyone will be smiling during Madagascar 2.
