Default China's cyber spies break into government computers

Hacked systems discovered in embassy of Taiwan, Dalai Lama's office

A electronic spying operation based primarily in China has infiltrated government and private computers in 103 countries around the world, including those of the Dalai Lama, The New York Times reported late Saturday.

Citing a report prepared by Canadian researchers the paper said the system was being controlled from computers based almost exclusively in China.

"We uncovered real-time evidence of malware that had penetrated Tibetan computer systems, extracting sensitive documents from the private office of the Dalai Lama," investigator Greg Walton said.

The research group said that while it's analysis points to China as the main source of the network, it has not conclusively been able to detect the identity or motivation of the hackers.

Calls to China's Foreign Ministry and Industry and Information Ministry rang unanswered yesterday.

Students For a Free Tibet activist Bhutila Karpoche said her organization's computers have been hacked into numerous times over the past four or five years, and particularly in the past year. She said she often gets e-mails that contain viruses that crash the group's computers.

The investigation by specialists based at the Munk Center for International Studies at the University of Toronto started when the office of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader, asked them to examine its computers for signs of malicious software.

Their work led them to a broader operation that had infiltrated at least 1,295 computers in 103 countries in less than two years, The Times said.

Many of these computers belonged to embassies, foreign ministries and other government offices, as well as the Dalai Lama's Tibetan exile centers in India, Brussels, London and New York.

The researchers said they believed that in addition to the spying on the Dalai Lama, the system, which they called GhostNet, was focused on the governments of South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, the paper noted.

The researchers detected a cyber espionage network involving compromised computers from the ministries of foreign affairs of Iran, Bangladesh, Latvia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Barbados and Bhutan. They also discovered hacked systems in the embassies of Taiwan, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Romania, Cyprus, Malta, Thailand, Portugal, Germany and Pakistan.

Once the hackers infiltrated the systems, they gained control using malware - software they install on the compromised computers - and sent and received data from them, the researchers said.

Two researchers at Cambridge University in Britain who worked on the part of the investigation related to the Tibetans were also releasing their own report yesterday.

In an online abstract for "The Snooping Dragon: Social Malware Surveillance of the Tibetan Movement," Shishir Nagaraja and Ross Anderson write that while malware attacks are not new, these attacks should be noted for their ability to collect "actionable intelligence for use by the police and security services of a repressive state, with potentially fatal consequences for those exposed."

They say prevention against such attacks will be difficult since traditional defense against social malware in government agencies involves expensive and intrusive measures that range from mandatory access controls to tedious operational security procedures.

Last year I met a person who was working with the Cyber crime Department in MUmbai, he also told me about all these attacks from China and asked me to find some unique software for him from the INternet.

I was shocked that a Cyber cell personnel is asking for such thing to me.

So according to this incident, I dont think, we are safe or our systems are safe.

Go to yahoo chat, Delhi 6 room........you wil know how safe are we.
somebody will come and boot your system without any reason

I know some of these guys are incompetent as you said Mirchi. One of my office programmers once asked me,a naive, to make a salary software few years back when our systems were not so advanced...But take this we do have some very intelligent people in our security system you wont imagine. I am saying this because a friend of mine who is a DBMS expert works in intelligence...So dont worry we are in safe hands....

Do you think an IITian would work for a mere 10-20,000 bucks....This is the irony little boy...anyway I am happy we do not rely fully on computers as of now....May be in the future it might be a cause of worry....
