Arrow ✜ RIHANNA: How the Good Girl went Bad! ✜

'Umbrella girl'. That's probably the most popular and positive name she's earned in her young career.
The others include 'Chris Brown's ex-girlfriend' and 'Beyonce wannabe' in the early days.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty crossed over the latter-most tag with ease considering her star power was hard to
escape no matter what the critics said. But will she get rid of the Chris-Brown-bashing-session
that none today can refrain from mentioning?

Maybe with an upcoming album she might. But till then, it's our turn to pick apart
the pieces of Rihanna's life in the limelight.

The 21-year-old singer was born in Saint Michael, Barbados. Her mother, an accountant, split from Rihanna's father,
a warehouse supervisor, because of his crack and cocaine addiction. As most star stories go,
she too was a shy individual who took up music as a means to express herself.
How many of them do we have? Most recently - Susan Boyle.

Sometimes it's not all about luck and talent. Good friends count, too. And Little Riri certainly had some.
They introduced her three-girl band, which she created when 15, to Evan Rogers who helped
Christina Aguilera shoot off to fame. And then, it was history.

She landed up in the USA to live her American dream. And she didn't have to try too hard.
The 16-year-old cut a demo-tape with her big hit Pon De Replay. It landed up with none other than Jay-Z.

However, it wasn't time to start singing Umbrella...ella...ella…ey...ey yet. Jay-Z was reportedly
apprehensive of signing Rihanna as he felt her single Pon De Replay '...was too big for her.

'When a song is that big, it's hard [for a new artist] to come back from. I don't sign songs, I sign artists,' he said.
'Some people chase the hot song for a minute. I want to sign an artist based on a swagger,
the level of talent, the writing. I was a little reluctant.'

But then he felt otherwise when she strode into the room.
'It took me two minutes to see she was a star,' said Jay-Z.

This was the second time Rihanna's mere presence won over confidence. The same happened the very
first time she auditioned with her band for Evan Rogers. He said, 'The minute Rihanna walked into the room,
it was like the other two girls didn't exist.'

Her first two albums - Music of the Sun and A Girl Like Me - did well commercially,
but didn't win favourable criticism. Promoted as a reggae artist, her music had elements of anything but reggae.

Her lead single from the first album was described as 'a dancehall-pop mixture that owes plenty of its sweat and shimmy
to Beyoncé's Baby Boy,' by Slant Magazine. Nevertheless, the single hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rolling Stone had to say this about A Girl Like Me: Like her filler-packed debut album, this similar
but superior follow-up doesn't deliver anything else as ingenious as its lead single.

But the public was lapping up her SOS, Unfaithful, We Ride, and Break It Of.

It would be sometime before she escaped from the shadow of her idol - Beyonce.
Incidentally, Rihanna sang Emotions by Destiny's Child when she auditioned for Evan Rogers.

But Beyonce's not the only one on her 'Idol' list - and that probably explains why her music has such
diverse influences. Her ‘influences’ include Bob Marley, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys,
Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, Celine Dion, Brandy, Gwen Stefani and Madonna.

Thankfully though, she wasn't influenced by the fashion sense of her latter-most idol, namely Madonna.

The two had a sort of showdown before the Costume Institute Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Both wanted to wear thigh-high lace-up boots, but Madge apparently threw a tantrum commanding Riri not to wear it.

God bless, Madonna! Rihanna caused quite a stir in her first major red carpet appearance after the Chris Brown
episode in a stunning menswear-influenced black Dolce & Gabbana puff-sleeve suit, ruffled white shirt and a bow tie.

But getting back to music, her real worldwide fame came with her hit album Good Girl Gone Bad.
The hit song Umbrella with Jay-Z won her her first Grammy for Best Rap/Song Collaboration.

However, the title of her hit album soon began to sound like a warning.

But there was some good news - before she headed into the big crash-and-burn with Chris Brown,
she stacked up fame not just in music but in fashion as well.

Rihanna's hairstyles were a whole new revolution on its own.
Whether people had her on their iPods or not, they definitely had her
    in their style guide.

Riri was the entire package. You couldn't just talk about her hairstyle and then move on.
The clothes, the shoes and the accessories had to be discussed, too. We've got to admit it,
style icons such as Posh Spice and Madonna never had it this easy.

Also, with Good Girl Gone Bad, Riri grew to love permanent ink. She's currently got 12 tattoos.

    # A Pisces sign behind her right ear

    # A star on the left ear

    # A Sanskrit prayer on her hips

    # The word 'love' on her left index finger

    # The word 'shhh...' on her right index finger

    # Her date of birth on her left shoulder with a dragon claw and hibiscus

    # A gun on her ribcage

Considering Riri was a style queen, it was only natural that brands zeroed-in on her. Her endorsement kitty includes Secret Body Spray,
Nike Sportswear, J C Penney, CoverGirl, Clinique, Gucci, Totes, and Iconic Fragrances.

While women of all ages were trying to emulate her natural style sense, she went and got herself
into a situation no woman should ever want to mimic - domestic violence.
