Battles within battle in West Indies..!!

    M S Dhoni

    Vs

    Chris Gayle

India and West Indies will be hoping to get off to a winning start in their four-

ODI series beginning in Jamaica on Friday. The following are the battles that

may determine the course of the contest and the key men who will fight them.

    Gambhir vs the new ball

In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir will be given the task of negating the new ball threat from the West Indies.

Gambhir's solidity will be critical in the face of a barrage of short stuff India's batsmen should expect. With the injured Fidel Edwards out, West Indies are a

    bit short-changed in that department.

    Gayle vs Indian seamers

Just as important will be the new ball contest at the other end. Chris Gayle knows only one way to play, and in front of his home fans at the Sabina

Park, he will be under pressure. How well can Ishant Sharma, RP Singh and Ashish Nehra negate the Gayle factor?

Yuvraj and Dhoni vs Bravo and Benn

The pedigree in India's middle order will be tested too. Yuvraj Singh had an awful series in the West Indies in 2006, and Dhoni's recent form has been

patchy. The onus to provide impetus to the innings in the end will fall on Yusuf Pathan. But against the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Sulieman Benn who

will surely bowl the middle overs, Yuvraj and Dhoni will have to come good.

Indian spin vs Sarwan and Chanderpaul

India will surely rely on spin in the series, and quite naturally the role of not just keeping the flow of runs in check but also scalping wickets will fall on

Harbhajan Singh. Perhaps even Pragyan Ojha could come into the mix. The experienced pair of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan have

always been a handful in one-day cricket. So that battle in the middle will be interesting.
