Default Pakistan vs Srilanka, 1st Test, Galle

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 1st Test, Galle, Day 1

    Kaneria dropped as Pakistan field

For the first time since the Multan Test of 2004, or 38 Tests, Pakistan started a Test without Danish Kaneria. They were always going to play three fast bowlers, and going to field first if they won the toss. And they did win it.

Two of those fast bowlers were debutants - the 17-year-old Mohammad Aaamer and the 30-year-old Abdur Rauf. So was Kaneria's replacement, Saeed Ajmal, perhaps getting the nod by the virtue of being an offspinner against Sri Lanka's ready supply of left-hand batsmen.

Amid the debutants, Mohammad Yousuf made a comeback, becoming the first ICL player to play a Test again. Yousuf took Faisal Iqbal's place.

Sri Lanka didn't want to hold back bold moves either, going in without a specialist wicketkeeper. Instead they gave a Test cap to Angelo Mathews, which meant either Kumar Sangakkara or Tillakaratne Dilshan would have to keep. The 31-year-old left-arm spinner Rangana Herath replaced Muttiah Muralitharan who injured his knee during practice. Unlike Pakistan, Sri Lanka went in with only two medium-pacers, Nuwan Kulasekara and the left-armer Thilan Thushara. Mathews provided them the fifth-bowler option.

    Pakistan
: 1 Salman Butt, 2 Khurram Manzoor, 3 Younis Khan (capt), 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Saeed Ajmal, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Mohammad Aamer, 11 Abdur Rauf

Sri Lanka: 1 Malinda Warnapura, 2 Tharanga Paranavitana, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thilan Thushara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Rangana Herath

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 1st Test, Galle, 1st day

Rauf and Younis hurt Sri Lanka

    Debutants make it Pakistan's session

Mohammad Aaamer should have taken four wickets in his first spell in Test cricket, but it was not to be - thanks to drops by Shoaib Malik at second slip and Kamran Akmal. The beneficiaries of those happenings, Tharanga Paranavitana and Mahela Jayawardene, threatened to rebuild Sri Lanka from 21 from 2 at quick pace, but another debutant, the 30-year-old Abdur Rauf, removed Jayawardene nine minutes before lunch to vindicate Younis Khan's decision to field first after playing three fast bowlers.

The presence of Paranavitana, who gave them two chances early, will irk Pakistan. Paranavitana had helped himself to a 72-ball 57, which featured forcing shots off the front foot, and a couple of edges through the slip cordon.

The morning, though, will be remembered for the 17-year-old Aamer's debut, who followed his first-over success on Twenty20 international debut with the wicket of Malinda Warnapura in his first over in Tests. Right from the first over Aamer got the ball to move both ways, bowling regularly in the mid-130s.

Warnapura hadn't looked comfortable, lofting Aamer unconvincingly, barely over mid-on. The next ball was shorter, moving in sharply, cramping him, and taking the bottom edge onto the stumps. If it was the inward movement that got Warnapura, the away movement should have got Paranavitana in his next over. The batsman was only 1 then. That didn't deter Aamer from getting new Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara through to third slip in the next over.

Between those two events Paranavitana got another life, ballooning Umar Gul to regulation short leg, but Khurram Manzoor was placed deeper. In Aamer's next over Akmal dropped a sitter, and if Sri Lanka didn't get it together now, no wake-up calls would be enough.

Rauf, too, started promisingly, holding the seam blot upright and getting some away movement from the right-hand batsman. But Paranavitana and Jayawardene had had too much of a sighter now to repeat mistakes. The pitch, too, started to settle down, not enough to make batting easy, though. The batsmen made sure they hurt Pakistan tellingly for those let-ups, getting quick runs. Paranvitana looked composed, attacking off the front foot, and Jayawardene looked ominous in setting himself up for a big one.

When Paranavitana hit back-to-back boundaries in Aamer's fifth over, cutting one through gully and then whipping a half-volley past midwicket, he had crossed his previous best of 21, with five fours. Longer spells from fast bowlers were not possible in hot and humid conditions, and Younis had to rotate his bowlers, even bowl himself.

Paranavitana got to his half-century with another big over, taking 11 off Rauf, and reached the landmark in just 66 deliveries. Rauf, though, had a final twist up his cocked wrist, getting the ball to hold its line beautifully and getting an edge from a set Jayawardene
