Default Johnny Depp & his many faces

Johnny Depp & his many faces

It's one thing to be versatile and another to look and seem entirely different in every other movie. We dub Johnny Depp 'The Chameleon'. Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka and the other myriad colourful, sometime eerie faces have only one thing in common - the Hollywood star.

Regardless of how garish Depp's avatars are, we can't get enough of the sinewy, many-faced man. And we totally love that he's cool with makeup and loves to experiment. Here are some of his most famous, and our favourite, onscreen characters.

Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)

Braided and beaded hair, awful teeth, rum-soaked breath, a constant slur, tipsy yet delicate footwork, scruffy wardrobe, and yet we fell for him hook, line and sinker.

There's only one reason why Pirates of the Caribbean happens to be one of our all-time favourite franchises. Too bad Orlando Bloom doesn't count.

    Edward Scissorhands

The 'uncommonly gentleman' will always have a soft spot with us. Depp not only won us over with this performance, but also made a fan of Tim Burton who would repeatedly cast him in the future.

As Edward - the incomplete, artificial man, with scissors for hands - Depp slashed right to our hearts. And one could tell the amount of work that had gone behind this character not just in terms of make-up but body language as well.

Depp apparently studied Charlie Chaplin to figure out how to generate sympathy without dialogue

Willy Wonka (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Though the movie itself didn't cut any ice with us, Depp's powdered, top hat look bowled us over. Once again he made us forget the Depp we know and made us see a reclusive chocolate mogul, in search of an heir, friends and family.

Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)

In the already-mentioned avatars, Depp has been endearing despite his kookiness or strangeness. But in this movie he turns truly horrific. He plays a barber whose vengefulness turns into bloodlust as he goes about murdering his customers.

The Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland)

Tim Burton's sequel to Lewis Carroll's original promises to make it all the more weird for us. And staple Johnny Depp takes on the role of the Mad Hatter. Though this time we feel Madonna could've fit right in. Spot the similarity?

John R De Marco (Don Juan DeMarco)

No, it's not the Errol Flynn kind of movie. Depp plays a psychiatric patient clad in a cape and domino mask, and still manages to look the Casanova and ooze the sex appeal of his namesake

    Sam (Benny & Joon)

This movie is about Depp all the way. The suspenders, fedora, cane and physical comedy ushered in this era's most versatile actor with a smidgen of Charlie Chaplin.

    Roux (Chocolat)

We drool over Depp's super hot, super slick look in this flick - just the way we do over the title. Depp plays an Irish gypsy. The mystique and charisma that we associate with gypsies are all there in Depp's Roux.
