    Best of Harbhajan Singh

One of the bad boys of cricket, Harbhajan Singh is notorious for his boorish ways on and off the field. With the cricket ball in his hand though, the hot-blooded guy gives it one solid rip.

A wiry looking Harbhajan made his Test debut in 1998 against the touring Australians and then returned in the high-profile 2001 series against the same opponents to lead the Indian spin attack in the absence of an injured Anil Kumble. Bhajji grabbed 32 wickets in the three match Test series and his wizardry with the ball launched him into super stardom in Indian cricket. Let's now take a look at some of his best performances in Test cricket.

VVS Laxman changed India's fortunes in the Test match, but it was Harbhajan's spinning deliveries that dealt the killer blow. The Australians started the run chase in the final innings on a brisk note, but as soon as Harbhajan Singh was pressed into service by Sourav Ganguly, the off spinner delivered the breakthrough removing Michael Slater first up. Then came the wickets of Justin Langer, Steve Waugh and Harbhajan's bunny, Ricky Ponting, Australian middle order came a cropper in front of the spin and guile of Harbhajan. The off spinner later returned to pick the final Australian wicket of Glenn McGrath, which then sparked off delirious celebrations in the Indian camp.

After the miracle win in Kolkata, Team India moved on to Chennai for the decider of the series. Harbhajan Singh by now was all over the Australian batsmen. Except, Matthew Hayden none of the Aussies were comfortable facing his spin. In the first innings of the third and final Test, Harbhajan scalped seven wickets, but could not stop the Australians from piling on 391 runs. The Australian openers scored at almost four runs in an over in the second innings and threatened to take the game away from India. Harbhajan Singh though did the damage and picked up crucial wickets and cut through the Australia middle and lower order. Bhajji's spin prized out eight opponent batsmen and turned the game back in India's favour.

The West Indian first innings crumbled against the pace-spin combo of Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble. However, in their second innings, it was Harbhajan Singh who proved to be unplayable. On a track that spun viciously, Harbhajan removed the left hand openers Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds, and then later came back to blow off the West Indian tail. Harbhajan kept a tight line and the roughed up pitch did more than enough to have the visiting batsmen in a tizzy. Uncertain and uncomfortable against Bhajji, the West Indians lost seven wickets to his to his spinning deliveries.

The first Test against the South Africans in Kanpur ended in a dull draw and the second the final Test at Kolkata, the scene of many marvelous Indian wins, provided the perfect platform to go for the clincher. The third innings of the match was when the pendulum swung India's way, with Harbhajan nailing the South Africans cheaply. The top five batsmen in the visiting side failed to counter Bhajji's spin and paid the ultimate price. Later, all-rounder's Shaun Pollock and Justin Ontong fell to Harbhajan Singh, giving the spinner an innings haul of seven wickets.

Harbhajan Singh is often accused of not winning India a Test match on foreign soil. On India's tour to New Zealand in 2008-09, the off spinner made amends and grabbed six wickets in the Hamilton Test to leave India chasing a paltry target of 39 runs in the final innings. The historic win was achieved and Harbhajan played a major part in bringing home the silverware.
