    Default ~~bachchon ki awaz:~~<ek prayas

    ~~~*~~~Kids turn journalists to end social evils~~~*~~~
    A young breed of reporters is on the move in Varanasi. Don't underestimate them or take them lightly. Their reports not only stir one's
    mind but also put one in a tight spot as nothing escapes their watchful eyes.
    ~~*~~
    Over 20 young scribes, all in the age group of five to 13 years, have volunteered to bring out a newspaper. Children of weavers and slum-dwellers, these children have come out with 'Bachchon Ki Awaz' (Children's Voice) -- a two page, hand written tabloid sized weekly newspaper for the children of Varanasi.
    ~~*~~
    The editor of `Bachchon Ki Awaz' is 10-year-old Sameer Sheikh. Working with a group of committed young reporters, he said "after writing reports, we cut them in different sizes and then paste them on a sheet of paper." A class VI student of a local primary school, Sheikh said "we make photo copies of the paper and distribute it. The paper covers issues related to children and society, like child abuse and exploitation, drug addiction among children, rights of children and civic amenities."
    ~~*~~
    While five-year-old Tauhid is a crime reporter, six-year-old Tabrez Alam works as photographer and concentrates on clicking pathetic condition of civic amenities. Yasmin and Ili write about problems faced by girls, like lack of education. "We don't want to raise only problems. We want to motivate people into sending their daughters to school," said Yasmin, daughter of a weaver.
    ~~*~~
    The newspaper is also the mouthpiece of the Children's Parliament -- perhaps the first and only parliament of its kind in the world. The newspaper office is being run on the premises of Vishal Bharati Sansthan (VBS) office, which has been working for the past 17 years for the cause of rag-picker children and wards of poor weavers.
    ~~*~~
    The Children's Parliament, formed by children in the age group of 5-13 through democratic election, came into existence in June last year. These children are mostly rag pickers and kin of poor weavers. The elected young leaders raise voice on issues like kidnapping of children, malnutrition, hike in school fee, shortage of parks and playing grounds, physical punishment in schools, safety and security of children.
    ~~*~~
    Besides, these children also have their own banking system for their savings. After the school, most of these children earn Rs 15-20 a day through petty jobs like rag-picking and helping on handlooms. They deposit some part of their earnings in the savings accounts in Punjab National Bank.
