Cool Debate: Should 'Cricket' be India's National Sport ?

So India did it again, won the illustrious Cricket World cup.

If I am correct, India has the highest number of population that is cricket crazy. Cricket unites the nation unlike any other sport.

So should it be made national sport ? or it should be kept as it is- Hockey as National Sport.

    No it'll never be...
national sport is not a joke that u can think of changin' it anyday...
rite now cricket rules...but hockey ruled India's heart for a period of 50 yrs...we were unbeatable at grass...its only dat corrupt administrators n lack of innovation regardin' astroturf led to our decline...
in states like punjab, haryana & jharkhand...kids still play hockey...
right approach...right guys...n hockey can rule again!

answer to debate : a serious firm NO!!!

    Glad to see you again!

I don't think cricket needs to be made the national sport because then hockey will be totally eliminated from India. People still remember hockey because its the national sport. If cricket replaces it, it won't take long when our kids will ask what the hell is hockey? India has produced many great hockey players in the past and it rightfully deserves to be the national sport.

the question shouldnt be that whether cricket be made a national sport....
the question should be......what is the use of making it the national sport ?......
see hockey is already national sport......usko kya fayda hua

no doubt as an Indian everyone is proud of the India winning the world cup which is the beginning of a new era in the phase of indian sports that does not mean it should have a strong dominance and should bring in a revolution of the existing era.........but lets us remember that nothing is permanent national sport of India was is and will be hockey..............If hockey is not being put into practice then efforts to bring awareness has to be done similar to what Cricket is to India today

I am not aware of how much of a sustained effort has been put to revive hockey. In the past broadcasters made some noise about Hockey Premier League, I'm not sure how many editions came up and why it stopped?

Ask any school going kid, the names of 7 current hockey players I bet he'l go mum but at the same time he'l have the WC stats at his fingertips. The thing is we sympathize with out national sport but aren't interested in it until the news channel flash and sensationalize one great encounter Ind - Pak and yes this time hockey gets some TRPs with some free armchair advice by the viewers on how to successfully convert a corner after cornering the game itself for ages.

We have had some excellent players in recent past and current ones too, but have we "helped" them in any way so they may change the sport as you suggest?

Cricket shouldn't be our national sport though dhoni made us proud by lifting the world cup because hockey had marked a spot for India in the world of sports as a great and strong competitor .

It had made India pround when we were struggling to get a place in the world.

Its just because of over advertisement of cricket and the so called brand value of the players that had given them such a hype..

If the MNC's start supporting hockey players, wrestlers, etc. then these sports will also come in the so called "limelight" .

I truly support yashraj films and shahrukh khan for making a marvellous movie "Chak De ! India" and giving some importance to our national sport.

If we as a country would not helo our own national sport then it would fade away with time taking the glory and esteem that it gave India when she required the most.....
