    Default Cricket's Biggest Villains

    Suraj *****v

In a poor display of sportsmanship, the Sri Lankan spinner bowled a no-ball to Virender Sehwag when India needed a single run for victory during a 2010 triangular series in Sri Lanka. What makes this incident deplorable is the fact that *****v's no-ball resulted from his overstepping the popping crease by at least a foot and this left Sehwag stranded on 99.

It's obvious that the no-ball was deliberate, and it was *****v's way of registering a hollow victory in an otherwise lost cause. He was promptly suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket, and soon after he even apologized to Sehwag

    Saleem Malik

One of the first known fixers of the game, this Pakistani batsman became the first player ever to be banned for match fixing in 2000. Before he tarnished his reputation, Malik was a 17-year veteran of a Pakistani cricket team that had managed to win improbable overseas series and even the 1992 World Cup. He had even captained his side on a few occassions to a decent degree of success.

Despite all of his achievements, he has managed to leave a bitter taste in our mouths by ruining the game we love!

    Darrell Hair

A good umpire's supposed to be unbiased, calm and level-headed. Darrell Hair is none of those things. Then again, we never said he was a good umpire! Hair caused a controversy in 1996 when he no-balled Muthiah Muralitharan for chucking, although no other umpire till then thought his action to be contentious. Thanks to the support of the Australian Cricket Board, this man continued to stand in many more international matches.

Again in 2006, he was in the middle of a ball-tampering scandal, where a supposedly racially motivated decision forced Pakistan to forfeit a test match against England. This sounded the death knell for Hair, as many called for his head. He tendered his resignation to the ICC soon after

    Greg Chappell

Long before we hated him for messing up Indian cricket, this arrogant Aussie was hated in cricketing circles for the 'underarm' incident. It was the third match of the 1981 World Series finals in Australia. New Zealand needed a 6 to tie the match off the last ball. Fearing that Kiwi tail-ender Brian McKechnie would do the unimaginable, Chappell instructed his brother Trevor to bowl an underarm ball, which could never go for a six.

Trevor reluctantly bowled as per instructions and all hell broke loose. Everyone from the commentators to the players and fans was outraged by the lack of sportsmanship. He may have scaled a few peaks in his time, but he'll always be remembered for things like this. Some legacy for a world-class batsman

    Harold Larwood

Many might argue that he was just the pawn in the Bodyline gambit and that this young English country boy was just following the orders of his evil general; all the same, he was responsible for hurting quite a few defenseless batsmen on that tour.

The plan was to primarily stop Don Bradman, but it ended up in a bloodbath for the Aussies, thanks to Larwood's quick, short leg stump line. Not being the mastermind does not absolve him in any way!

    Hansie Cronje

There was a time when this former South African skipper could do no wrong. In fact, the only blemish in his 5-year captaincy seemed to be the now-familiar World Cup let downs of his teams in 1996 and 1999. However, after a string of allegations in 2000, Cronje came clean about his links with several bookies. His revelations also shed light on other South Africans and Indians involved in the racket. He was banned from cricket the same year.

He might not have been the biggest villain of them all, but he certainly left us with many unanswered questions since his tragic passing in a plane crash in 2002

    Douglas Jardine

The chief architect of Bodyline--one of the most disgusting tactics used in cricket--this former English captain was in a single-minded pursuit of the Ashes urn in 1932-33. He made his intentions clear that Australian summer by infamously stating, "I've not travelled 6,000 miles to make friends. I'm here to win the Ashes."

His plan was to have his quick bowlers hurl short pitched deliveries on a leg stump line to batsman wearing no more than a baggy green cap on their heads. His plan worked as England retained the Ashes. However, Jardine was widely criticized for his captaincy and he even retired the following season, but he had already tarnished the game by then!
