    Default Top Ten Scream Queens

    Fay Wray

Widely regarded as the first 'Scream Queen', Canadian-American actress Fay Wray is today best known as King Kong's swooning play-thing in the 1933 classic, but in her 57-year career she achieved international acclaim for a range of horror film roles, including Doctor X (1932), The Most Dangerous Game (1932) and Black Moon (1934).

    Default Barbara Steele

English actress Barbara Steele became the cult queen of Italian gothic horror in the 1960s, most memorably in Mario Bava's Black Sunday (1960), in which she plays a vampire-witch who comes to a very bad end with a spiky face-mask and a hammer.

    Default Tippi Hedren

Grace under fire, that's what ice-cool Hitchcock queen Tippi Hedren is all about. Even when bombarded by hordes of very, very angry birds in the Hitchcock's 1963 classic, she still maintained a beautiful coiffed barnet and a very chic skirt-suit. She also appeared opposite Sean Connery in Marnie (1964), and her daughter Melanie Griffith became a successful actress in her own right.

    Default Linda Blair

In one of the most notorious performances by a child actor ever, Linda Blair's head-spinning, blaspheming, projectile-vomiting turn as the Satanically possessed Regan in The Exorcist shocked the world in 1973 and still sends a shiver down the spine today.

    Default Sissy Spacek

The most iconic performance of acclaimed actress Sissy Spacek's 40-year career is as troubled teen Carrie White in Carrie, the 1976 horror film by Brian de Palma based on the book by Stephen King. The spellbinding climax has to be seen to be believed, and you'll never think about prom night in the same way again.

    Default Gaylen Ross

By the late '70s, female protagonists in horror and sci-fi began to be less about screaming and more about kicking ***. In George Romero's 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead, Fran (played by Gaylen Ross) never screams once, and she knows how to handle a gun too. The following year, Sigourney Weaver's performance as Ripley in Alien (1979) was a groundbreaking move forward for feminist cinema.

    Default Rose McGowan

McGowan loves schlock horror so much she even dated Marilyn Manson for 3 1/2 years. Her portfolio includes Scream (1996), The Black Dahlia (2006), the TV series Charmed (2001-2006) and Grindhouse (2007) - in which she memorably plays a go-go dancer with a machine-gun for a leg.
