    Default Transgenders: Mocked or accepted?

Most of us have seen them either on reality TV, harassing people at weddings or births, or begging on the streets. There really has been no middle ground for the transgender community in India so far. But signs of change are imminent. In July last year, students of Welingkar Institute of Management developed a community centre that focuses on creating work opportunities for the transgender community. Based on a social entrepreneurship model, this centre provides a meeting ground for employers and transgender people seeking employment. Operated by members of the transgender community, this business module has won at the Mumbai region level in the international Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) competition.

Transgenders are also working as agents for the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) in parts of Tamil Nadu. This progressive move was an attempt to integrate them into the social mainstream, said R Vasuki, TN state director of social welfare.
Until 2011, transgenders were counted as men in the census.

Winning the right to be listed as 'other'rather than 'male'or 'female' is a real victory.

    Maria Mehra

People call me a hijra without even knowing what this means
She began with being a homosexual before she turned to cross-dressing and coming to the ultimate realisation that she was a transgender. Maria Mehra feels the long journey of changing from Ashwin to Maria been one of self-realisation.'It takes years to identify who you really are,' says Maria.'Many times strangers have called me a hijra without even knowing what this means. People in India are insensitive and jump to conclusions easily,' says the 38-year-old transgender. She says she never faced such a bias when she started cross-dressing as a student in Europe. 'At times people ask me when this happened to me.How should I explain them that I have always been this way? I was a woman born in a man's body. People think it's a conscious choice you make to draw attention to yourself, but the reality is completely different,'she adds.Maria emphasises that there is a big difference between transsexuals and transgenders and that people aren't aware of this. 'I am a transgender as I identify myself solely as a woman despite having a male body. The day I will opt for a sex change surgery I will become a transsexual,' she points out.'It will be a million steps closer to being a complete woman as my body will be aligned with my soul and my desires,' she adds.
