Default Mystery Men: Wrestling's Best Masks

We know that they're just window-dressing and that they make it harder to emote, but we just can't help it: We love wrestling masks. Collected here are 25 of our favorite masks of all time.

    25 Rey Mysterio
Unless it's part of their gimmick, we absolutely hate it when wrestlers plaster crosses all over their gear - it's the wrestling equivalent of a Jesus fish or one of those nails people dangle from their necks. But while we much prefer Rey Mysterio's older mask design, with a crown instead of a cross emblazoned on the forehead, we still have to give it to Rey-Rey for his unbeatable imagination and originality, as he's worn countless masks over the years, riffing on everything from superheroes to designer clothing

    24 Hallowicked & Frightmare
Though their home promotion is Philadelphia's Chikara, Hallowicked and his protege Frightmare have performed in several independent American promotions, primarily on the East Coast, including Ring of Honor and EVOLVE. Like the ugly, artsy girl from your Intro to Creative Writing course, both wrestlers cut up their t-shirts in wacky ways, but more importantly, they wear masks. While they aren't exactly the same, conceptually they have enough in common for us to lump them together and save a spot for some other lucky fellow. Incidentally, Ms. "I don't care if it sounds trite - it actually HAPPENED!" probably should have thrown a mask on too

    23 Suicide

The character of Suicide has been played by Frankie Kazarian, Christopher Daniels and others as a quick, aggressive cruiserweight in TNA's X-Division. But, in spite of a rad mask and cool costume, Suicide has always struggled to get properly over, a problem that likely has something to do with TNA's inexplicable decision to use the wrestler for a week or two before throwing him back wherever it is TNA keeps their wrestlers . Interestingly, Suicide is the only wrestling character to have his origin in a video game, TNA iMPACT!, that is, until someone wises up and makes Pretty Prince Aubrey happen

    22 Delirious
Another indy darling, Delirious isn't just a wrestler, he's also the head booker and trainer for Ring of Honor. With his unintelligible babbling, lucha mask and the long green and black braids emanating from it, Delirious looks like Mexico's biggest Korn fan, which for some reason, totally works for us

    21 Dos Caras
When discussing Alberto Del Rio, wrestling dirt sheet commenters will be quick to tell you two things: 1) "You're a mark and you don't understand the business," and 2) "He's the son of legendary luchador Dos Caras and used to go by Dos Caras, Jr." Before his son was driving extremely short distances in extremely expensive cars, Dos Caras Sr. was kicking around Mexico, with his double-headed dragon-bird mask design

    20 Blue Blazer
Pretty much every wrestling fan knows the tragic circumstances that led to Owen Hart's death, so we won't be getting into that here. What we will be getting into, however, is the wrestling mask Hart wore when competing under his superhero gimmick as the Blue Blazer. No, it's not the best wrestling mask in the world, but Owen wore it well

    19 El Generico
El Generico is, without a doubt, the most beloved luchador in all of Canada. The former tag team partner of Kevin Steen, Generico used to play the face-in-peril, but these days wrestles in Ring of Honor's singles division, with his signature wacky-scarf-thing attached to his mask and flapping around wildly as he tosses out brainbusters willy nilly

    18 Vader
Time for a shameful admission: We've never really been clear on what Vader Time is, what we're supposed to do during it, or even when exactly it takes place. Best we can tell, however, Vader Time involves a mask that does absolutely nothing to obscure your identity, but does end up being kind of helpful when trying to keep your stupid eyeball inside your head.

    17 Sin Cara
Yeah, Sin Cara wrestled under a different mask as Mistico, but the fact of the matter is that his current mask is well cooler than the sparkly silver deal he used to prance around in. Sin Cara's mask doesn't make much sense from a wrestling point-of-view, as it makes emoting impossible and couldn't be easy to see in, but you have to make sacrifices if you want to look like the world's coolest Power Ranger

    16 Kane
Listen, we love Kane's current look - the odd half-shaved head, the weird contact lens - seriously, it realy works for us. But though he's spent far longer with the mask off than on, we'll always prefer Kane's original look. He looks like the monstrous star of the worst S&M videos we can possibly imagine, and honestly, what's more terrifying than that?

    15 Midnight Rider

Dusty Rhodes' Midnight Rider gimmick is the type of inspired stupidity that makes wrestling truly great. Absolutely no one was fooled by the disguise, due in large part to Rhodes' recognizable physique, and that was kind of the point. The gimmick was influential enough that similar ones have been used by Hulk Hogan when he went by Mr. America, and more recently by John Cena, who wrestled as Juan Cena at house shows back in 2010. And on top of all that, we're just ****ers for an Allman Brothers reference.

    14 Mil Mascaras
Mil Mascaras is the brother of both Dos Caras and Sicodelico, and as suggested by his name's English translation, "a thousand masks," the guy's pretty fond of his headgear. While they aren't the flashiest masks in the world, their classic design with Mascaras' signature "M" emblazoned on the forehead have influenced generations of luchadors

    13 Curry Man
We've been kind of tough on Christopher Daniels, partially due to his wacky stint as Curry Man, which totally undercut the seriousness of his previous Fallen Angel gimmick. But while we think it was of questionable wisdom to turn Daniels into a comedy act, we absolutely love his Curry Man outfit, mostly becuase it looks like it should be on a M.U.S.C.L.E. figure

    12 Cody Rhodes
As a preening, personal grooming-obsessed heel, "Dashing" Cody Rhodes had one of our favorite gimmicks in WWE, but when Rey Mysterio kayfabe busted up his face, Rhodes went from awesome to inspired, borrowing more than a little from Marvel's Dr. Doom. Yes, there's nothing actually wrong with his face, and yes, you can totally see that through his clear mask, but what kind of maniac wants strict realism from wrestling anyway?
