Default Viswanathan Anand beats Boris Gelfand to win World Chess title

Moscow: India's world chess champion Viswanathan Anand retained his title on Wednesday by beating Israeli challenger Boris Gelfand in a thrilling speed chess decider of their match in Moscow.

Anand took the lead in the tie-breaker after winning the second game following a draw in the first. The Indian chess great then held his Israeli opponent to draws in the third and the fourth game to clinch his fifth world title.

The two players were forced to duel it out in the rapid chess tie-breaker after a tied 6-6 result in the World Chess Championship regular matches.

The Minsk-born Israeli had chances in all the games to put pressure on Anand and at times showed magnificently resourceful defence against the Indian's attacks.

But a mistake in the endgame of game two as his allowed time was rapidly running out handed that game to Anand and Gelfand failed to make a breakthrough in the next two games that ended in draws.

With Gelfand seeing no chance of the victory he needed in the final fourth game he offered the draw which gave Anand the title. After four-and-a-half hours of extreme tension, the two men shook hands and immediately left the stage.

"It was incredibly tense," Anand told reporters at a news conference.

"The match was so even that I had no sense of what shape the tie-break would take."

"I think that right now, the only feeling you have is relief. I am really too tense to be happy, but there is relief."

In Chennai, Anand's father Viswanathan Iyer was esctatic. Asked if it was one of the toughest games for Vishy, he said: "Yes. Gelfand has always been a tough opponent. Even in the earlier games if you see he has been always a tough opponent."

Mr. Iyer added that "it was the proudest moment of our lives".
    Thank you bala
