Default 30 Second Guide to: Referees In Football

As per Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, the referee is the ultimate authority of the football pitch. This person has to not only ensure the smooth functioning of the game, but they also have to coordinate with two assistants and at times, a fourth official.

Needless to say, a referee's job is tiring, and one needs to be in great physical shape before even thinking about officiating a professional match. That is why top-class officials need to go through rigorous training and various tests conducted by the football association (or the soccer governing body) in their country. Only these well-trained referees can go on to become FIFA officials.

Referees have to bear in mind the countless rules and regulations, and enforce them whenever necessary. And they have to do all of this while keeping up with world-class athletes. As a result, they tend to use the Diagonal System of Control (DSC), which involves a referee running on a diagonal path between the touchlines. The two assistants, meanwhile, man the corners that are not on the referee's diagonal path of the field. This system allows for fluid officiating, and it has been used for decades now.

As far as gear is concerned, referees are required to wear mandated jerseys, shorts, badge and socks. The color of their uniform is, more often than not, black. However, with the emergence of colorful leagues around the world, even referees are draped in vibrant gear. And even if a league prescribes a black jersey for a referee, they have to wear a different color if one of the playing teams sports a shade similar to black.

Other than that, referees carry a whistle, a watch, penalty cards, a data wallet with pen and paper, and a coin with them at all times. Given the amount of running around they have to do during the 90 minutes of a match, it's amazing they can keep track of all of these tiny details. Add to that the plethora of hard decisions they have to make every now and then!

All this trouble for a salary that is just a tiny fraction of the rich footballers that they prance around with! While an English Premier League referee can make up to INR 5,600,000 a year, most officials do it for next to nothing!
