Default India's Tennis Players At The Olympics

Leander Paes (Men's doubles and Mixed doubles)
Paes ended a 44-year individual medal drought for India when he outplayed Brazil's Fernando Meligeni to win a singles bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. India's highestranked doubles player will pair up with Vishnu Vardhan, after both Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna refused to partner him. Leander will pair up with Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles. A fighter to the core, Paes has time and again come up with inspirational performances for the country.

    Mahesh Bhupathi (Men's doubles)
This may be his last chance to win an Olympics medal for India. After playing with Leander Paes in four Olympics, Bhupathi will combine with Rohan Bopanna in London. The two came together at the start of the season, but have not set the courts alight. They have played 14 tournaments together and won one - the Dubai Open. They were ousted early at Wimbledon. However, they have shown sparks in patches. They beat the world number one pair of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor at the Rome Masters in May.

Sania Mirza (Women's doubles and Mixed doubles)
Sania Mirza failed to qualify for the London Olympics, but made it through a wild card. She has spiralled down the rankings due to lack of form and injury. She won the French Open this year with Mahesh Bhupathi and wanted to pair with him at the Olympics, but the federation chose to team her with Leander Paes with whom she won the gold medal at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. She also won a silver with Vishnu Vardhan at the 2010 Guangzhou Asiad. In the women's doubles, she will partner Rushmi Chakravarthi.

    Somdev Devvarman (Men's singles)

The singles player's entry was a surprise call. Recuperating from a shoulder injury, the 27-year-old had all but given up hope before he got a wild card for the Olympics. With a career-high ranking of 62, Devvarman has shown the potential to be a partypooper. He is still to play a tournament to test his fitness after recovering from his injury and will be up against the best in the world at the All England Club in the British capital.

    Rohan Bopanna (Men's doubles)

Known for his big serve, the tall Coorgi steadily climbed up in the doubles charts after forging a strong combination with Pakistan's Aisam ul Haq Qureshi two seasons back. He, however, chose to play with Bhupathi with the Olympics in mind. He entered the top- 10 in the ATP rankings with Aisam, reaching the final of the US Open in 2010. Bopanna and Bhupathi would be eager to prove themselves, having fought with the federation to play in the Olympics as a pair.

    Rushmi Chakravarthi (Women's doubles)
A veteran in the domestic circuit, Rushmi Chakravarthi carries a never- say- die attitude on the court. The 34- year- old was not among the original shortlisted players to partner Sania MIrza for the London Olympics but pipped others on her form. She suffered a knee injury last year but came back to win two doubles ITF titles this year. Sania and Rushmi competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze medal.

    Vishnu Vardhan (Men's doubles)
The Olympic call-up was as surprising for Vishnu as it was for anyone in the country. He is one of the bright stars in Indian tennis and playing with Leander Paes would serve as a great experience for him, especially at a stage such as the Olympics, which will have the top stars of the world. Although the London Games is the biggest stage for him so far in his career, Vishnu has a silver medal to his credit which he won with Sania Mirza in mixed doubles at the Guangzhou Asian Games two years ago, besides a bronze medal in the team event.
