    Lady Diana, the Princess of Wales died in a car crash on this day exactly 15 years ago. She and her companion, Dodi Fayed, met with the accident in the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris, France. Though it is widely believed the accident took place due to negligent driving, there are many conspiracy theories which suggest it may have been orchestrated by the MI6 on the instructions of the royal family. Diana had divorced Prince Charles almost exaclty a year before her fateful accident.

    James Dean, the 'rebel without a cause' and American actor who became wildly popular among youngsters, died in a car crash on September 30, 1955. James was driving his new Porsche 550 Spyder to an auto rally when he was involved in a head-on collision. James Dean, only 24 years old, died in the crash. His mysterious death only further added to his intrigue and aura, and even today, he's known as the face of teenage angst and rebellion.

    Rockstar and frontman of 'The Doors', 27-year-old James Douglas Morrison was found dead in his Paris apartment's bathtub on July 3, 1971. The official reason was that he died of a heroin overdose. But those who know him say Jim had an intense hatred for the drug and of needles. Adding to the intrigue was the fact that the only people who saw the body were medical personnel, who never spoke to the press, and are all deceased now. Even his band manager never saw Morrison's body. There was no autopsy performed either.

    Vocalist of 'Queen', Freddie Mercury, grew up as Farrokh Bulsara in India. Freddie, a confirmed bisexual, was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, though it was never announced to the general public. Over the next four years, he completely disappeared from public life, only to resurface on November 23, 1991, to issue a statement confirming his HIV positive status. A little over 24 hours later, Freddie Mercury breathed his last.

    South African batsman and captain Hansie Cronje, even today considered to be among the finest cricket captains of all time, was convicted of match fixing in 2000 and banned for life. On June 1, 2002, Hansie was travelling from Johannesburg in a Hawker Siddeley HS 748 turboprop aircraft, which crashed in the mountains near George airport. Cronje, 32, and the two pilots were all killed instantly. Theories suggesting he was killed by the betting mafia are still abound.

    Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Indian freedom fighter, is said to have died in a plane crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945. But it has long been the subject of dispute, and considering his body was never found, there are innumerable conspiracy theories. Especially those that suggest he never died, and merely disappeared to the USSR.

    Jimi Hendrix, arguably the greatest guitarist of all time, was found dead in his Notting Hill apartment, aged 27. The official reason was that he choked on his own vomit and there was a large quantity of sleeping pills found in his system as well. But questions of whether it was an accident or whether he was murdered still refuse to go away, even more than 40 years later.

    On June 1, 2001, the Nepal royal family was beset by a massacre. The heir to the throne, Prince Dipendra, killed nine members of his family and himself in a fit of drunken rage. According to reports, Dipendra was drinking heavily and tried to misbehave with guests at a party, when his father told him to leave. In a fit of rage, Dipendra shot his parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, before killing himself.

    On April 5, 1994, Kurt Cobain, frontman of the rockband Nirvana, allegedly shot himself. His body was found three days later with a visible head shot, and a suicide note nearby. However, a private investigator hired by his wife Courtney Love, said that Cobain may have been murdered. His credit card reports also suggested somebody tried to use it hours after his death.

    Most own goals in football are comic. This one, however, was incredibly tragic. Andres Escobar, Colombian defender, scored an own goal in the 1994 football World Cup against the US, a goal that led to his team's exit from the tournament. Once back home, Andres was just coming out of a nightclub he'd visited with a few friends when a group of men shot him with handguns. It was supposed to be revenge for having scored the goal that led to Colombia's exit from the World Cup.

    The two hip-hop artistes had quite a rivalry going in the early 90s. Tupac was killed in a shootout at a Las Vegas stoplight after a boxing match in 1997. A few months later, Notorious B.I.G met with the same fate while waiting at a Los Angeles stoplight. The numerous similarities in their two deaths means conspiracy theories connecting the two refuse to go away. Neither case has been solved yet.

    36-year-old Hollywood actress Marylin Monroe was found dead in her apartment on August 5, 1962. Official cause of death was supposed to be acute barbiturate poisoning, but considering Marylin was rumoured to have an affair with then President John F. Kennedy, there are many who suggest the powers that be may have had something to do with the death. Allegations that many items were removed from her bedroom - including her personal diary - seem to suggest that her death may have been an attempt to keep a scandal from toppling Kennedy's Presidency.

The police registered his death as a homicide, and his personal physician Conrad Murray was convicted in November 2011 of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving a 4 year sentence in prison
