Gayle, along with a number of other big names in the squad, had already been involved in a long dispute with WICB over sponsorship deals in the past. In 2011, after declaring himself unavailable for the national squad to be involved in the IPL, Gayle went on to publicly criticize the WICB and the Windies coach Ottis Gibson. The dispute kept him out of the West Indies squad for nearly 15 months until the two parties reached a compromise in June 2012.

Following a 50 in his comeback ODI game against England in June, Gayle was superb during New Zealand's tour of the West Indies in July. He was Windies' top scorer with 230 runs in the two match test series that the hosts won 2-0. He was the top scorer of the 5 match ODI series with 220 runs, which the hosts bagged 4-1.

Gayle is known to be a cool and composed sportsman who hardly changes his aggressive approach of the game in any format. His batting reflects confidence, arrogance and sheer power

Irrespective of the nature of the competition, Gayle has always been an indispensible and almost irreplaceable part of his club and national side.

He may not be a technically gifted batsman, but it's hard to keep your eyes off of him when he is on the crease. Gayle's hunger for hits will never cease to amaze us.
