Smile Katy Perry is Billboard's Woman of the Year

The singer was hailed as "one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry" by the publication's editorial director, Bill Werde.
"Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career," femalefirst quoted Werde as saying.

"We are thrilled to celebrate these incredible achievements and her amazing past 12 months by presenting her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. With what seems like a never-ending supply of record-breaking, chart-topping hits, coupled with her unique and fresh style, Katy Perry is hands-down one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry today," he added.

The annual event celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business and the previous recipients includes Taylor Swift, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce Knowles.

This year's event will take place in New York on November 30 where Perry will receive her award.

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Katy Perry was brought forth to the world as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. As the daughter of evangelist pastors, her parents, Keith and Mary Hudson, dished a strict religious upbringing and only let her listen to gospel music. But as some kids dabble in drugs, Katy Perry dabbled in rock music, and would often sneak contraband CDs into the house: 'The first time I bought a record it was by Incubus. I brought it home in my knapsack and I had things on top of it so my parents didn't strip-search me,' she told The Sun newspaper.

In early 2000, Perry headed to Nashville and signed to the Christian music label Red Hill, with whom she recorded a self-titled gospel rock album (under the name Kate Hudson) at the age of 15. But after failing to make an impact in the Music City, she changed her last name from Hudson to Perry (her mother's maiden name), and moved back to California. For the next seven years, she would grind it out in Los Angeles, bouncing between labels and one-off gigs, before finally teaming up with superstar writer-producer Dr. Luke and producing the track 'I Kissed A Girl.'

Coming from a wholesome, Christian background, you have to wonder what moved Katy Perry to pen a track about macking the cherry chapstick off girls. Whether she's actually kissed girls is still up for debate, but according to Perry, it was ScarJo who inspired her hit song.

'I saw a picture of Scarlett Johansson' she told Steppin' Out magazine. 'I was with my boyfriend at the time, and I said to him, 'I'm not going to lie: If Scarlett Johansson walked into the room and wanted to make out with me, I would make out with her.''

The epiphany paid off and, in the summer of 2008, she found massive chart success with 'I Kissed a Girl,' which was released as the first single under her newly adopted name.

'I Kissed a Girl' may have netted Perry her first multi-platinum single, but her record label (Capitol Music Group) were still struggling to find a marketable image for the once gospel-gabbing songstress. Hoping to give her a sexier, harder edge, in June 2008 a publicity photo emerged of Perry posing with a switchblade. The stunt wasn't well received and, as a 'fork you' to critics, Perry later posed with a spoon. That same month, Perry's debut album under Capitol was released, One Of The Boys, shortly followed by her second single, Hot n Cold.

In December 2008, Kitty Purry whipped out her claws and dug them into British singer Lily Allen, when she described herself as 'a fatter version of Amy Winehouse and a skinner version of Lily Allen.' Not one to back away from a fight, Allen retaliated by telling Capital FM, 'I happen to know for a fact that she was an American version of me. She was signed by my label in America as, 'We need to find something controversial and kooky like Lily Allen.' And then they found her...I think the lyrics and stuff are a bit crass.' Miaow!

Have you ever pondered how Katy Perry met her long-time BFF and fellow pop tart Rihanna? In a May 2012 interview with Elle magazine, the pair finally spilled on how they became 'fast friends' during a rehearsal for the 2009 Grammy Awards - yup, that's the same awards show Riri later backed out of after Chris Brown assaulted her.

Perry told Elle that when she saw Rihanna at the rehearsal, 'she had this cool studded Valentino bag that had sparkly stuff on it.' Having complimented her on it, Rihanna offered to send her one of her own. 'I was like, 'Oh great, here's one of those tricks who talks fast friends but never lives up to it,'' Perry recalled thinking at the time. 'And then Valentine's Day came around and I got a little Valentino bag in the mail from her. I thought, 'Wow, this is a woman of her word.'' So there we have it, a sparkly handbag is the way to a woman's heart...although shoes and chocolate are also much appreciated.

Capitalizing on the success of One of the Boys, Perry jumped aboard Warped Tour 2008, before embarking upon her first headlining tour, the Hello Katy Tour, in early 2009. For the stages, she enlisted the help of Madonna's main men, and indulged in her obsession of fruit and cats. The result? A ginormous blow-up kitty, juicy strawberries and lots and lots of bananas. The 89-stop tour was a huge success and sold out at most venues.

    • Urban pop legend has it that Katy Perry first met her husband-to-be, Russell Brand, at the September 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Brand, who was hosting the night's festivities, remarked, 'Katy Perry didn't win an award and she's staying at the same hotel as me, so she's gonna need a shoulder to cry on. So in a way, I'm the real winner tonight.'

But the truth is that Brand and Perry shared their first kiss earlier than that, in June 2008, when Perry filmed a cameo for his film Get Him to the Greek. Her scene called for her to smooch the bird-nest-haired Brit, much to her delight: 'On the way down the stairs after the scene, I was hopping like a bunny. I hop like a bunny when I'm happy - I get a bit childlike,' she told Glamour. The lip-locking scene was later cut because it would have proved too much of a reality check for movie-goers

We can all remember the first time we witnessed Katy Perry spraying an army of gummy bears with her chest cannons in her hyper-sexual video for California Gurls.

The bubblegum battle was epic and the end result was one of the best summer songs of all time (Billboard will back us on that). But Perry's candy creamed adventure left some with a bad toothache, as Solange Knowles tweeted that the west coast anthem 'is like kiddie porn though. All them damn colors, candy and sh** . . . and then daisy dukes, breast shooting cream...' Um Solange, didn't your older sis Beyoncé dedicate an entire song to jelly and booties?

After grappling with Lily Allen, Katy Perry's next near-feud ignited from a tweet she posted, just after the release of Lady Gaga's video for Alejandro. 'Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke,' she wrote, comparing the Queen of Quirk's work to a bad smell. Later in an August 2010 interview with Rolling Stone, Perry also noted that, 'I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord's name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth.

I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen.' So it seems under all those whipped-cream and firework shooting Hershey's kisses bras, there still lives a good gospel girl, even if she's usually smothered and gagged by a proselytizing cleavage.

Hot on the sticky heels of 'California Gurls,' Perry once again teamed up with Dr. Luke to produce her next generation of Skittle-coloured hits, Teenage Dream. Released in August 2010, Teenage Dream soared to the top of the charts, helped along by Perry's 'on cloud 9' nude cover. It would go on to spawn no less than five number one singles, making her the first female artist to achieve this milestone, and equalizing the original record set by Michael Jackson with his album Bad.

Let's face it, you're nobody in Hollywood, until you have your very own fragrance. Joining a long list of celebrity stinks, Perry released Purr in November 2010, packed in a purple kitty shaped bottle after insisting on incorporating her obsession of all things feline. Perry described the milestone perfume as 'a natural extension of who I am as a woman,' and then proceeded to dress like a cat for every press opportunity.

The next chapter in Perry's life, and the point from which her Part of Me movie picks up, began with her California Dreams tour. This gruelling 124-stop tour started its journey in February 2011 and traversed the globe for almost a year. After marrying Russell Brand in an Indian hindu ceremony only three months earlier, the touring schedule was tough for the newlyweds, which is well documented as the narrative arc of her film. In one scene, as she's about to go onstage in Brazil, she sobs uncontrollably backstage as her marriage to Brand falls apart, and talks about her dashed desire for a 'fairytale' romance. On the bright side, the tour netted over $59.5 million, and while we know money can't keep you warm at night, that kind of cashola can buy you more than a few Mulberry silk comforters.

We were still recovering from the 'shock' of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' split/publicity stunt when, in December 2011 Perry and Brand announced their break-up, citing irreconcilable differences (you just know that means he leaves the toilet seat up). The pair had been together for just 14 months which, let's face it, still makes the marriage a bigger success than most of Brand's movies. Officially announcing the split, Brand released a statement via AP, in which he said 'I'll always adore her, and I know we'll remain friends,' while Perry went on to enter her...
