Sam Mendes praises "bravery and brilliance" of Daniel Craig as Skyfall wins Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs

Director also paid tribute to "the great" Ian Fleming, who created James Bond

Skyfall picked up another accolade tonight, being named Outstanding British Film of the year at the BAFTA awards.

The movie, the third starring Daniel Craig as the suave spy, is already the highest-grossing film of all time at the UK box office.

The Bafta award was presented by Bradley Cooper and Ben Affleck.

Skyfall director Sam Mendes paid tribute to the "bravery and brilliance" of Craig and "the great" Ian Fleming, who created James Bond.

Some of the biggest names in Hollywood braved the wind, rain and sleet to meet fans on the red carpet at the Baftas.

Stars including Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and Eddie Redmayne stopped to sign autographs and pose for pictures outside the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

Among the celebrities at tonight's EE British Academy Film Awards were Hobbit star Martin Freeman, Alicia Vikander and Tom Hiddleston.

Also on the red carpet were Daniel Day-Lewis, Jessica Chastain, George Clooney and Dame Helen Mirren - the latter sporting dyed pink hair.

Host Stephen Fry introduced the show which started with a performance by Paloma Faith of the INXS hit Never Tear Us Apart.

Roger Deakins & Oscar: 'Skyfall' Cinematography Loses Academy Award Again

Roger Deakins and Oscar can't get together.

Deakins, one of the most acclaimed cinematographers of the modern era, lost in the Best Cinematography category to "Life of Pi" cinematographer Claudio Miranda at the 85th annual Academy Awards. This was Deakins' 10th nomination without securing a win.

The 63-year-old Deakins is responsible for the look of some of the most beloved films from the last 20 years. To wit, he was nominated in the Best Cinematography category for "The Shawshank Redemption," "Fargo," "Kundun," "O Brother Where Art Thou?," "The Man Who Wasn't There," "No Country for Old Men," "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," "The Reader" and "True Grit." Deakins is a frequent collaborator of the Coen Brothers and "Skyfall" director Sam Mendes; in addition to "Skyfall," Deakins also shot "Jarhead" and "Revolutionary Road."

His next film is the kidnapping drama "Prisoners," with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Adele's 'Skyfall' theme wins Oscar for the best song

    HOLLYWOOD, Feb 25, 2013 at 12:57pm IST

Los Angeles: Adele's 'Skyfall' has won the Academy Award for best original song, a first for a James Bond theme.
While 007 themes have long been a beloved movie tradition, they've never before won an Oscar. Three previous Bond tunes were nominated: 'For Your Eyes Only,' 'Nobody Does It Better,' and 'Live and Let Die.'
The Oscar extends Adele's award show dominance, leaving only an Emmy eluding her of the major American awards. She accepted the Oscar with producer Paul Epworth, with whom she wrote the lyrics and composed the music.

Adele also performed 'Skyfall' for the first time at the Sunday night ceremony.
The other nominees were 'Before My Time' from 'Chasing Ice'; 'Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from 'Ted'; 'Pi's Lullaby' from 'Life of Pi'; and 'Suddenly' from 'Les Miserables.'
