    Cool Playboy Coming to India

    Courtesy: TOI

First reaction - Really?! Playboy coming to India? Really? Bunnies? Yeah... No. But wait, turns out it's true - Playboy coming to India is a fact. While most people continue to giggle like pre-pubescent schoolboys when you mention the articles in Playboy and let alone the fact that you can't buy the magazine anywhere in the country, the company has tied up with an Indian partner and announced that it will open a chain of stores selling "lifestyle products," cafes and clubs by the end of the year. In other unrelated news, the Oxford English Dictionary has decided to redefine the word: Aspirational.

"There will be nothing contrary to Indian sensibilities. We are in the process of launching a sustained PR campaign starting this month to dissociate Playboy with adult content and nudity," CEO Sanjay Gupta, of PB Lifestyle Ltd (a 100% Indian company with the exclusive licence for Playboy in India) told the Wall Street Journal. Is it just me or is the whole "dissociating nudity with Playboy" thing sort of like.. oh I don't know... daft? He went on with,"The Playboy club will be about the Playboy lifestyle and its glamour image rather than the negative side of it, if I can call it negative."

He also announced: "The first upscale club with 22,000 square feet of space will open by mid-December on North Goa's Candolim beach, making it the first beach location for Playboy globally." This will also be the first upscale club where the bouncers won't be as shady looking at the Russian thugs that probably own the plot of land they're building the club on.

Okay I know I'm not supposed to editorialise but... seriously? This is a country where we have "rulers" who are calling for underage marriage, no cell phones for women and claim that young people hanging out and eating "Chinese food" causes rape. This is the country where the night life in the metroes shuts by 1am and the legal drinking age is one of the highest in the world. And didn't the capital pass a curfew of 8pm for women? In this environment, surely there must be tonnes of businesses that you could have brought in instead of Playboy? Or do you have a secret genius plan that we don't know about? "We are clear about one thing: There will absolutely be no nudity. The bunnies will be suited to Indian sensibilities and moral values." Oh brilliant! So no bunny tails and bunny ears, we'll put them in sarees and bindis - that'll go down well with the fundamentalists... and the right-wing women's groups... and the fundamentalists... and the moral police... and the cops... and the fundamentalists

Or maybe I'm over-reacting... I'm sure they've done their research. I mean, what do I know sitting in front of a computer, passing judgement...

"If there is an obscenity, if they violate our culture or corrupt our youth, obviously we will oppose it,” Shiv Sena leader Jitendra Janawale told the Wall Street Journal. He also said that the clubs and cafes should not be located near schools and residential areas.

    Yep... I guess I was over-reacting.

By the by, this guy's claim to fame was leading a protest in 2009 demanding that the poster of a movie called Kurbaan be banned - for showing actress Kareena Kapoor's bare back.

Yep... I was totally over-reacting. Hef's probably going, "Bareback? What is this - Afghanistan?"

The company is planning to invest over $37.2 million over the next two years opening 120 clubs, cafes and stores. If my math is correct, the 0.2 part of that will go towards actual work...

    take care!

Default Playboy Clubs to enter India, without the bunny costumes

Mumbai: The Playboy club is coming to India—but with "bunnies" in non-revealing outfits.

"The costumes of the bunnies, who are integral to the Playboy culture, will be based on Indian sensibilities and morals," Sanjay Gupta, CEO of PB Lifestyle, which is bringing the brand to India through a licensing agreement, told Reuters.

India has strict censorship laws and there is no Indian version of Playboy, the magazine launched by Hugh Hefner that became as known for its pictures of naked women as for the hedonistic lifestyle propagated by its founder.

Playboy bunnies, or waitresses, typically wear black satin bodices, bow ties, cuffs and bunny ears. PB Lifestyle has not yet decided what waitresses will wear in India.

"Our clubs will not have any nudity. So there should not be any problem and we are prepared to deal with it if there is any," said Gupta, whose media and real estate company signed a 30-year licensing agreement with US-based Playboy Enterprises Inc.

Gupta's company plans to use the Playboy brand and its iconic rabbit-head logo on clubs, bars, hotels and cafes and will spend Rs. 200 crore in the first five years. The first Playboy property in India will be a club in the resort state of Goa, followed by one in Hyderabad.

Whether the Playboy brand will sell in a toned-down version remains to be seen.

"They are associated with scantily clad women, fun and pleasure. What is the point of getting Playboy to India in such a boring way?" asked 25-year-old Yash Sanghavi, a digital advertising

    ..........
    Thank you bala

Default India's first Playboy Club to open in Goa

India's first Playboy Club to open in Goa

Adult entertainment company Playboy is set to open its first club in India in north Goa's Candolim beach. The club will open by mid-December.

Indian tourist officials in Goa have warned that they will shut down the Playboy club if there is any evidence of "obscenity, vulgarity or nudity."

Playboy's local franchisee PB Lifestyle has announced plans for more than 100 outlets in India, starting with a beachside club in the holiday state, but their "bunny" waitresses will sport a new look to suit conservative Indian values.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said he will inquire into the entry of Playboy Club, the Indian franchisee of the United States-based group, in the state.

"We will not allow it (to operate) if there is anything wrong," Parrikar said, responding to a question on the announcement of Playboy Club to set up a shop in Goa.

"I will have to look into the matter. Just because name of the club is Playboy we cannot conclude anything," the chief minister added. Director of Tourism Nikhil Desai told PTI that his department was yet to give permission for the club. "What I know is that setting up is at the discussion stage," he said.

Desai earlier had said that the department will shut down the club if there was nudity, vulgarity or obscenity in the entertainment provided there. Women's organisations in the state have opposed the club's entry.

PB Lifestyle, which has the rights to develop Playboy outlets in India, plans to open clubs, hotels, fashion cafes and shops across the country in the next 10 years, investing at least Rs 2 billion.

The firm is planning more modest outfits for the bunnies, famous for their skimpy costumes of corsets with fluffy rabbit tails and ears, PB Lifestyle chief Sanjay Gupta said. He also stressed no nudity would be involved.

Playboy magazine, along with a host of other foreign "adult" magazines, is not permitted in India owing to obscenity laws banning material deemed "lascivious or appealing to prurient interests.
