It's easy to lose a trail and stray away from a designated course during a trek. To avoid this, one must always carry a topographical map of the area and a compass to gauge directions perfectly. A map goes a long way in assisting a trekker in helping him find his current location and scout a suitable route for the entourage.

The second most vital element to carry during a trek is a bug-repellent cream. The wild is infested with bugs of various kinds, and they do tend to crawl their way through into your clothings, so the safest bet is to apply a repellent cream thoroughly after every 4-6 hours. This will also prevent you from contracting any obscure disease and help you have a sound sleep at night as well!

    Tent and Sleeping Bag

If the trek involves spending a night or more in the wild, then it's strictly advised to carry a tent and a sleeping bag. This offers a secondary layer of protection from bugs, reptiles and other small creatures that may be of nuisance to a trekker. It also offers a visual barrier to wild animals that hunt at night and reduces the paranoia of sleeping out in the open.
