Default Women's safety: Delhi gang-Abu Azmi wants law to stop women roaming with men:

New Delhi: Under fire over his 'India and Bharat' comment, the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat got another jolt over an alleged comment on the role of women in society. "A husband and a wife are involved in a social contract. The wife has to take care of the household work and the husband has to meet her needs and protect her. If the wife violates the contract, the husband can disown her," he said while addressing a rally in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. That soundbyte sparked a row, before the RSS clarified that he was misinterpreted.
RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said, "He was trying to make a distinction between western marriage and Indian marriage."
The political discourse on rape also took yet another turn with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray furthering his reactionary agenda, playing identity politics. "So many cases are slapped against me but no one is talking about the fact that all these rapists are from Bihar," he ranted. His comments drew sharp reactions.

Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, "This is harmful for democracy as people are dividing India." BJP leader Giriraj Singh said, "Leaders who use hate in their campaigns must be stopped. The Election Commission must disqualify their party."
From the 'dented and painted' remark of Congress MP Abhijit Mukherjee, to the 'deal gone wrong' remark by Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, to a Left leader making distasteful comments against the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the political discourse around crimes against women has increasingly been about raking controversies than taking concrete measures to curb crime.

People from Bihar to be blamed for rising rape incidents in the country: Raj Thackeray

Mumbai: Training his guns at people from Bihar again, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray blamed them for rising incidents of rapes in the country. Thackeray said that while everyone is talking about the Delhi gangrape, nobody is asking where these men came from.
"Everyone is merely talking about the rape. No one is asking who did this. So many cases are slapped against me (for speaking against Biharis) but no one is talking about the fact that all these rapists are from Bihar," he said addressing a rally in Mumbai.
There has been a public outrage since the gangrape case of a 23-year-old paramedical student in the national capital came to light. Thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding stricter anti-rape laws. On Saturday, a Delhi court took cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police on Thursday. The court also summoned the five accused named in the chargesheet on Monday, January 7. The case of the minor accused in the case will also be heard on Monday before a Juvenile Justice Board.

Am with tharoor on this; a new law can be passed and named it after Jyothi. Give 25 years jail time for rape attempt; 80 years jail time without bail for rape; for gang rape or murder give death penalty. There has to be a response.

Delhi gang-rape victim as guilty as her rapists, Asaram Bapu says

NEW DELHI: Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu has landed himself in a controversy over his remark that the December 16 Delhi gang-rape victim is as guilty as those responsible for the barbaric sexual assault on her.

"Only 5-6 people are not the culprits. The victim is as guilty as her rapists... She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop... This could have saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap? I don't think so," Media reports quoted Asaram Bapu, as saying.

According to media reports, the self-proclaimed godman further said that he is against harsher punishments for the accused as the law could be misutilised.

"We have often seen such laws are made to be misutilised... Dowry harassment law is the biggest example," he said.

The spiritual guru's remark comes at a time when the entire nation is mourning the death of the 23-year-old brave heart who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days later after the heinous crime.

The five accused of the brutal gang rape were produced before Saket district court today.

A fast track court had on Saturday taken cognizance of the chargesheet filed against the five accused by the Delhi Police. The court had asked the Delhi Police to produce all the five accused, Ram Singh, Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur on January 7.

Delhi Police had earlier on Thursday filed its chargesheet in the Saket metropolitan magistrate court against five men arrested in the case, slapping on them murder, rape, kidnapping and other charges.

The five accused have been chargesheeted for the offences of murder, gang rape, attempt to murder, kidnapping, unnatural offences, dacoity, hurting in committing robbery, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and common intention under the Indian Penal Code.

The sixth accused is a juvenile and proceedings against him will be conducted by the Juvenile Justice Board.

The victim's father has demanded that the juvenile should be hanged like the other five accused.

The victim, a physiotherapy student, was brutally raped and assaulted in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012. She died of her injuries on December 29, 2012 in the multi-specialty Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

Her male friend, who was accompanying her that day, was also assaulted by the accused and both of them were thrown out of the bus.
