Default ICC Women’s World Cup: India crash out as Sri Lanka advance to Super Six

India were tonight knocked out of the ICC Women`s World Cup after suffering an upset 138-run drubbing at the hands of Sri Lanka in a crucial Group A encounter here.

Chasing a challenging total of 283, the hosts put up a pathetic show to be bowled out for 144 in 42.2 overs at the Brabourne Stadium.

Incidentally, this was India`s first defeat to Sri Lanka in 18 matches, having won their previous 16 encounters with one ending in no result.

India lost three wickets for 38 runs in the 13th over, which included opener Poonam Raut, skipper Mithali Raj and last match centurion Harmanpreet Kaur. Kaur failed to score a run, while Raut (5), Raj (20) were trapped leg before by Eshani Kaushalya and Udeshika Prabodhini, respectively.

The India skipper shone briefly with the bat, striking four fours in the 35 minutes she spent in the middle.

The hosts reached 50 in 17 overs and it was always going to be an uphill task from there on, and they lost left-handed opener Thirushkamini Murugesan at the same score, adding to the woes.

The middle-order failed to forge a partnership and things plummeted for India as they kept losing wickets in quick succession.

India`s best partnership was for the sixth wicket between Jhulan Goswami and Reema Malhotra, who added 37 runs.

Malhotra was the top scorer for India with her 38 coming off 51 balls, and which included two fours.

India needed at least 251 runs to edge out the West Indies by virtue of having a better net run-rate and enter the Super 6 stage.

Sri Lankan skipper Shashikala Siriwardene and Chamani Seneviratne bagged two wickets each.

Earlier, Sri Lanka`s batting fired in unison as they posted a competitive 282 for five.

Deepika Rasangika led the way with a knock of 84 while Kaushalya provided the late impetus with a breezy, unbeaten 31-ball 56 to propel the visitors.

Yashoda Mendis (55) and Shashikala Siriwardene (56) were the other contributors for Sri Lanka.

But it was the match winner against England, Kaushalya`s blinder of a knock that lifted the Lankans. Her innings was studded with six fours and three sixes.

Opting to bat, Sri Lanka lost their first wicket in the first over itself, when left-hander Chamari Athapaththu was caught at first slip by Raj off pacer Goswami.

But Mendis and one-down batter Rasangika stabilised the innings and scored runs at a quick rate.

The duo forged a 117-run stand for the second wicket in 140 balls, before Mendis was caught by Gouher Sultana at mid-on off the bowling of Amita Sharma.

For India, former skipper Jhulan Goswami bagged three wickets for 63 runs in her 10 overs.

Rasangika, during here 151-minute stay at the crease, struck 11 fours. India tried to rein in the run rate even as Rasangika shared a 67-run partnership with skipper Siriwardene for the fourth wicket.

She was dismissed, when Raj ran backwards to take a catch at extra cover off Goswami.

The Sri Lankan skipper and Lokusooriya upped the ante adding 58 runs in 43 balls. Siriwardene, who scored 59 in 67 balls, was run out in the 47th over.

India will play Pakistan for the seventh position in Cuttack on Thursday.

Default Women's World Cup: West Indies thrash New Zealand by 48 runs

West Indies on Monday emerged as one of the leading title contenders after thrashing New Zealand by 48 runs in their second Super Six stage match of the ICC Women's World Cup at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

With the odds stacked against after three losses and one no result in their previous four clashes against New Zealand, the West Indies pulled off a comprehensive victory after bowling out their opponents for 159 in 44.3 overs, which kept themselves in hunt for a berth in the final.

New Zealand, who had opted to bat second, started their run chase of 208 with a stutter, as they lost opener Frances Mackay (4), one-down Sarah McGlashan (18) and Sophie Devine (9) within 10 overs for only 47 runs.

West Indies pacer Tremanye Smartt's devastating first spell of 7-0-26-3 was the main reason behind New Zealand's poor start.

Smartt provided her side with the initial breakthroughs as she trapped Mackay leg-before wicket and then castled McGlashan with a yorker. Smartt would have also dismissed McGlashan, but for a no-ball. The 27-year old also got rid of Devine, though the batter was unlucky to be have been given leg before.

The New Zealand middle-order, which didn't have enough role to play in the tournament so far, struggled against the spin attack and things nosedived for the last edition's runners up, when they lost their in-form player, captain Suzie Bates, to be reduced to 83 for six.

Bates managed to score 30 off 44 balls with three fours, before she was caught and bowled by Trinidadian spinner Anisa Mohammed.

The White Ferns' misery could be gauged from the fact that they took 31 overs to post 100 runs on board. Rachel Priest (36), who batted at number seven, tried to make a fightback, but it was all too late.

Earlier, a late onslaught from Anisa Mohammed coupled with a solid 52-ball 49 from Stafanie Taylor, guided West Indies to 207 for nine.

Spinner Anisa Mohammed, who came into bat at number 10, was aggressive and her 31 runs in 32 balls, with four fours, propelled her side past 200. She forged a 45-run stand with Shanel Daley (37).

Incidentally, this was West Indies' highest score against New Zealand, the previous best being 136 in the 2009 World Cup.

New Zealand left-arm spinner Morna Nielsen ripped through the West Indies middle-order, as she scalped three for 27 runs.

Pace spearhead Sian Ruck struck early to dismiss openers, Natasha McLean and Kycia Knight, within ten overs of play, while Bates chipped in with two wickets, including that of power player Deandra Dottin.

The world record holder for fastest century in T20s, Dottin did not disappoint, as she wielded her bat to strike four fours and a six in her 21-ball 27, but it was the number seven batter, Daley, who steered her team past the 200 with a patient 37 off 64.

Default Australia enter final of ICC Women's World Cup

Five-time champions Australia have entered the final of the ICC Women's World Cup after thrashing Sri Lanka by nine wickets in their second Super Six match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

In reply to Sri Lanka's paltry 131, Australia chased down the target in just 22.2 overs. This was Australia's fifth successive victory in the tournament.

In contrast to the Sri Lankans, who took 206 deliveries to reach the three-digit mark, Australia scored at slightly faster pace than run-a-ball to get to 100 in only 96 balls.

Openers Meg Lanning and Rachael Haynes provided a solid platform as the duo stitched a 55-run partnership.

Haynes scored an unbeaten 71 off 61 balls laced with nine fours and two sixes, while Lanning hit a 36-ball 37 studded with six fours and a six.

Prasadini Weerakkody was the only Lankan bowler to have picked up a wicket, getting rid of Lanning.

Earlier, put in to bat, Sri Lanka started on a disastrous note to be reeling at 41 for four before they eventually got all out for 131 in 45.2 overs.

Aussie off-spinner Erin Osborne was the pick of the bowlers, scalping three for nine from her 10 overs.

Incidentally this was Sri Lanka's highest score against Australia, as they were earlier bundled out for 82 in 2000 and 57 in 2005.

One-down batter, Deepika Rasangika (43) anchored the innings to an extent and shared a 49-run stand with wicketkeeper-batter Dilani Manodara (21) to steer the team past 100-run mark.

Australia's pace attack exploited the conditions well as Megan Schutt, Julie Hunter and Holly Ferling picked up wicket apiece at the start.

Australia were without the services of pace spearhead Ellyse Perry, who aggravated an ankle injury.

Cricket Australia Physiotherapist Claire Stokes in a statement said, "Perry has suffered an exacerbation of a pre-existing ankle impingement injury. At this stage we expect her to be fit for the next match against the West Indies."

After losing Yashoda Mendis (0), Chamari Athapaththu (10), skipper Shashikala Siriwardene (2) and Sandamali Dolawatta (4) within the first 16 overs, Sri Lanka crawled their way back for a brief period.

The left-hander Rasangika batted patiently in the able company of Manodara and the duo steadied the innings to some extent.

Rasangika struck seven fours in her 77-ball innings before she was caught at extra cover by Lisa Sthalekar.

Sri Lanka suffered another blow when they lost the set Manodara at the same score of 90. Osborne, who dismissed Manodara, struck in her next over to dismiss the dangerous Eshani Kaushalaya Lokusooriya for a duck.

The Sri Lankan tail wagged a bit to prolong the innings and the last three batters managed to add 23 runs.

Default Women's World Cup: India beat Pakistan to finish seventh

Skipper Mithali Raj finally came good with an unbeaten century as Indian women beat arch-rivals Pakistan by six wickets in a seventh place play-off encounter in the ICC Women's World Cup in Cuttack on Thursday.

Already out of contention after being hammered by Sri Lanka, the 'Women in Blue' came up with a much improved performance as they first restricted Pakistan to 192 for seven in 50 overs and then reached the target in 46 overs at the Barabati Stadium.

Skipper Mithali, who had been in woefully out of form, helped herself back into form with an unbeaten 103 off 141 balls with the help of 13 boundaries and a six. The only regret she would have is that her best came when it mattered the least.

Mithali added 87 runs for the unbroken fifth-wicket stand with Reema Malhotra, who remained undefeated on 25. The Indian women were in a spot of bother at 108 for four but the Indian captain found an able ally in Malhotra as they comfortably won their last game of the tournament with consumate ease.

Mithali also enjoyed couple of useful stands of 43 and 49 with opener Thirush Kamini (26) and Harmanpreet Kaur (16).

Earlier, the decision to bat first after winning the toss didn't quite work for Pakistan, who were saved to a large extent due to the contrasting half-centuries from Nain Abidi (58) and Nida Dar (68 not out).

The Indians bowlers, led by the economical pace duo of Jhulan Goswami (2/17) and Nagarajan Niranjana (3/35), kept it tight for most part of the 50 overs.

The hosts, who were knocked out of the event after being stunned by minnows Sri Lanka in a must-win group match, were off to a perfect start when they sent back the Pakistani openers with just 28 runs on the board in 11 overs.

But Abidi steadied the rocking boat by forging a small 32-run partnership with Bimah Maroof (15). Then came the crucial 80-run stand with Dar, which brought Pakistan back into the match.

Dar was the more aggressive of the two batters, striking seven fours in her 83-ball knock.

Abidi faced 113 balls and struck five fours before being out caught by Thirush Kamini off Goswami's bowling. After the settled partnership was broken, Pakistan could not accelerate in the closing stages faced with a disciplined Indian attack.

For India, Ekta Bisht also chipped in with a wicket even though she was tad expensive, conceding 50 runs in her nine overs.

Default Women's World Cup: West Indies enter final after narrow win over Australia

Underdogs West Indies stunned five-time champions Australia by eight runs in a thrilling low-scoring Super Six stage match to storm into the final of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup against the same opponents at the MIG Club ground on Wednesday.

Needing to win the match to qualify for the February 17th final at the Brabourne Stadium, the Windies women defended their modest total of 164 with plenty of zeal and pluck to snatch victory with eight balls to spare.

West Indies' first-ever win over Australia in ODIs also rendered today's other Super Six game between defending champions England and New Zealand at the Brabourne into an academic affair as irrespective of whoever wins that game, they will have to fight again for the third place play-off on February 15.

Both Australia, who have already booked their berth ahead of their final league match, and the West Indies secured eight points from four wins in the Super Six stage.

Chasing a modest total of 164 set by West Indies, Australia were inching their way to the target after facing some anxious moments early on after the loss of openers Meg Lanning and Rachael Haynes with only 32 on board, when disaster struck in the form of the dismissal of top scorer Alexandra Blackwell for 45 off 83 balls with four fours.

From 130 for four, Australia slumped to 156 all out in a dramatic collapse following Blackwell's departure while playing the sweep shot and falling leg before to Stafanie Taylor.

Her wicket, after she had added 41 runs with captain Jodie Fields triggered a slide in which Australia lost six wickets for the addition of 26 runs to slump to their defeat.

The Aussies lost Blackwell, Fields and Julie Hunter for the addition of one run to stare defeat at 131 for 7 and then Renee Chappell at 140.

Erin Osborne kept Australia in the hunt with a defiant 19 but ran out of partners at the other end and then finally departed when she was caught behind trying to scoop left arm bowler Shanel Daley who secured three for 22.

Earlier, the five-time champions bundled out their opponents cheaply after the latter chose to bat first on winning the toss.

Barring the hard-hitting Leandra Dottin who made a breezy 60 of 67 balls with a six and 10 fours, had no answer to combat the skills of the Australian medium-paced attack.

The Caribbean women folded up in 47 overs at the small ground where they made a record 368 for 8 in the preliminary league game against Sri Lanka.

Apart from Dottin, three other players - opener Natasha Mclean (26 in 34 balls with 4 fours) and tail-enders Shaquana Quintayne (15 in 48 balls) and Tremayne Smartt (10) - reached double digits.

Chasing the none-too-difficult target, Australia were in some early trouble when Meg Lanning and Haynes were sent back by Shane Daley before the 12th over.

Cameron and Blackwell batted well to restore stability to the innings.

Though the former was bowled playing across to Shaquana Quintayne after hitting 5 fours in her 60-ball essay and Sthalekar was run out by a direct hit from mid-wicket, they appeared to be only minor handicaps in Australia’s pursuit of their fifth successive win the six-team second stage.

But the West Indies had other ideas and completed a glorious and all-important win by fielding brilliantly throughout and effecting three run-outs too at crucial stages.

Apart from Daley, Stefanie Taylor picked up two wickets while Tremayne Smartt and Shaquana Quintayne got one each.

After the loss of the two openers, Jess Cameron (39) and Blackwell steadied the rocking boat with a partnership of 47 runs for the third wicket.

Though Cameron departed at 79 followed by Lisa Sthalekar 10 runs later, Blackwell partnered her captain Jodie Fields to put on another important stand for the fifth wicket and help Australia cross the 130-mark.

In the morning, West Indies, who were just one win away from making the February 17 final of the tournament against the same opponents, lost wickets regularly to the medium pace duo of Megan Schutt and Holly Ferling.

The two Aussie bowlers packed off six of the top seven wickets to fall, with just 92 on board, the other wicket being claimed by off-spinner Sthalekar, who turned the ball appreciably.

Sthalekar was also the only bowler to trouble Dottin, who had hit a record 20-ball 50 at this ground against Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament, in her superb first spell of one for 15 in eight overs, before ending up with 1 for 24.

Dottin came out firing from the first ball and struck meaty fours and a six in her half century knock to take the attack to the Australian bowlers after opener Natasha Mclean made 26, was bowled when charging out to off spinner Erin Osborne.

Half the Windies side was back in the hut by the 19th over with only 59 scored, with Schutt claiming the first two wickets of opener Juliana Nero and one-down Shemaine Campbelle inside the ninth over during her first spell of 2 for 19 in 5.

Schutt finished with three for 50 in her 10 overs by adding to her wickets tally, but her figures were spoilt by Dottin who carted her for two fours to the straight field in successive balls as soon as she came in for her second spell.

    Default Australia march into final

Australia entered the Women's World Cup final with their fifth successive win in the tournament, completing a nine-wicket demolition of Sri Lanka with 27.4 overs to spare. Jodie Fields asked Sri Lanka to bat in the morning, and set attacking fields for her bowlers throughout. All six bowlers responded with wickets, the offspinner Erin Osborne returning remarkable figures of 10-6-9-3 after seamer Julie Hunter's 6-3-6-1. Australia's batting, which has been a source of concern, had little trouble getting to the target of 132, with the openers Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning drowning Sri Lanka's remaining hopes in a flood of boundaries.

An hour into their innings, Sri Lanka were in trouble at 41 for 4 and it had it not been for a face-saving stand between Deepika Rasangika and Dilani Manodara, they would have struggled to get to 100. Fields did not let them get too far beyond that mark. The Australia captain was relentless in her pursuit of wickets, crowding the inner circle with fielders through the innings. One of the few times she had the maximum permissible four fielders in the deep was when the hard-hitting Eshani Kaushalya came in. The pressure of trying to beat the infield led to the regular fall of Sri Lanka wickets. This despite Australia's lead seamer Ellyse Perry missing her second successive game, this time with an ankle injury.
Megan Schutt did not need any help from her fielders in getting the opening breakthrough. Yasoda Mendis pushed tentatively at an incoming delivery and was bowled through the gate. Chamari Atapattu tried to go hard over mid-off but chose a slower one to do that, and could not clear the field. Holly Ferling, the 17-year old quick, struck in her opening spell again, sending back Sri Lanka captain Shashikala Siriwardene who nudged one down leg to the wicketkeeper Fields.
The Australian captain kept the field up after the opening Powerplay, and also left cover vacant to invite the drive against the offspin of Lisa Sthalekar. Sandamali Dolawatte went for the stroke to a flighted one, and a delighted Fields snapped up the edge. There was turn and bounce for the spinners but Surangika responded the way she had played against India. She lofted the seamers down the ground, swatted them through extra cover and also cut hard. Batting with a cap on, she even hooked the pacy Ferling to the deep square leg rope.
Rasangika was put down by Sarah Coyte off her own bowling on 22, but Australia restricted the partnership to 49 as Schutt had the batsman caught on 43 at short extra cover with the fifth ball of her second spell in the 31st over. Manodara, who had edged Coyte twice past the slips for four, fell in the next over as she tried to hit Osborne over mid-on, Schutt backpedalling to take a well-judged catch.
Kaushalya, who had shocked England and India with her powerful hits, did not hang around for too long. She slog-swept her fourth delivery from Osborne and Alex Blackwell took a low catch diving forward at midwicket. After some resistance from the tail, Sri Lanka were all out for 131.
Australia's opening pair rendered the game even more one-sided as they added 55 in under 10 overs. Lanning played out a maiden first up to Udeshika Prabodhani, and was on 1 off 14 before she cut loose. Drives, pulls, cuts, and a straight six appeared in no time as she raced to 37 off 36 before cutting one to slip.
Haynes took over, piercing the off-side field with numerous drives as Sri Lanka's fielding fell apart. She hit a couple over the advertising boards at long-on for six before bringing up the win with another cover drive for four. She was on 71 off just 61 by then, and Australia were in their seventh World Cup final in nine attempts.

Default Aussie girls shoot Windies down to earth`

Chasing 260 to lift the coveted Womens World Cup title, West Indies were bowled out for 145, falling short by 114 runs.

Australian pacer Ellyse Perry, who was carrying an injury, ripped through the Windies top order, getting rid of Kycia Knight, Natasha Mclean and star batter Stafanie Taylor.

From then on, the women from the Caribbean were playing catch-up with the required run-rate.

Earlier, after electing to bat Australia rode on half-centuries by Rachael Haynes and Jess Cameron to post 259 for 7 in their fifty overs. Haynes and Cameron put on 64 runs for the second wicket before Haynes was dismissed by Shaquana Quintyne for 52.

Cameron, however, carried on and smashed 75 of 76 deliveries, including eight boundaries and two sixes.

Despite a middle-order stutter when Australia lost four wickets for 28 runs, Ellyse Perry and skipper Jodie Fields provided the late burst.

    Fields struck 36 while Perry smashed a 22-ball 25.

For West Indies, Quintyne was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 27 in her ten overs

Default ICC thanks BCCI for women's World Cup success

ICC President Alan Isaac has thanked the BCCI for successfully hosting the Women's World Cup and praised the volunteers, organisers and sponsors for providing a wonderful opportunity to female cricketers to show their talent and potential on a world stage.

He added that the success of the tournament, as well as the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20 event in Bangladesh, where women's event will be staged alongside the men's event, would inspire more girls to take up the sport.

He said the quality of the ICC Women's World Cup would motivate teams to come to Bangladesh in March 2014 better prepared.
Speaking shortly after Australia beat West Indies by 114 runs at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai on Sunday, Isaac said: "It has been a high-quality event and has been a fantastic success.

"I think the cricketers have appreciated the level of organisation and expertise that has been brought to the event. I am truly grateful to the people in Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) and the ICC for the way in which they put the whole thing together. It has been really very impressive."
"It has truly been a world-class tournament. The event returned to India after 16 years and I know the cricketers have appreciated the level of organisation and expertise that was brought to the event.
"Special thanks to the people of Mumbai and Cuttack along with the venues, who backed this event so magnificently. They prepared for this event despite having a short notice and it showed in the final product," added Mr Isaac.
The ICC President, who watched Sunday's final between Australia and West Indies and presented the trophy to the winning side added: "The contribution of the volunteers has been really excellent. They worked tirelessly and contributed immensely to the success of this tournament.
"The ground staff at the various venues also deserves recognition for their talent and devotion in producing pitches that allowed all the eight sides to display their skills in perfect conditions."
The tournament which was spread over 18 days in which 24 matches produced outstanding individual and team performances with New Zealand captain and player of the tournament Suzie Bates ending as the highest run-getter with 407 runs from seven games at an average of 67.83.

Meanwhile, England captain Charlotte Edwards ended with two hundreds in the tournament apart from becoming the highest run-getter in women's ODI cricket, Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor produced some exciting batting, Sri Lanka's thrilling wins over India and England, West Indies' thrilling win over Australia and Australia's nail-biting victory over England in the Super Six stage.

Isaac thanked the players for their superb performances and hoped the exciting women's cricket calendar would motivate more players. "We should not forget the cricketers who gave their heart and soul for their teams and played cricket in accordance with its rich traditions.
"After watching over the past few days, I was pleased to see the standard. It was a pleasure to watch women's cricket which was skillful, demanding and very good entertainment.
"It is my certain view that the teams which have not done so well this time will be motivated by the quality of this event and would try to do better in the immediate future.
"With an ICC World Twenty20 event coming up in relatively short period where a women's event will be staged alongside the men's event for the fourth time in a row, this is very promising for women's cricket and more girls will be interested and motivated by this calendar."

Isaac also thanked the contribution of ICC’s commercial partners: "The ICC owes a huge vote of thanks to our commercial partners Reliance , LG, Pepsi, Emirates, Reebok, Castrol, MoneyGram and Hyundai ," he said.

ICC's broadcast partner STAR Sports produced High Definition live coverage all the ten matches from the Cricket Club of India and ensured that a global audience of millions in more than 150 territories got a chance to see the best of the best in women's cricket.
"The ICC would also like to thank STAR Sports, its global broadcast partner, for their efforts in producing a high quality broadcast of all the 10 matches played at the Cricket Club of India, as well as STAR Sports' licensees that broadcast those matches."
For the first five televised matches of the ICC Women's World Cup 2013 in India, for which data is available as of now, the TV ratings have shot up by approximately seven and a half times as compared to first five televised matches of the 2009 edition. The number of people who have seen the live telecast of these matches has also seen a six fold increase over the 2009 edition.
Isaac congratulated Australia for winning the ICC Women's World Cup for sixth time. "It has been an incredible performance by Australia. The way the team performed reflects the talent and self-confidence of the side. It just sums up three great weeks for them in India."
"Congratulations also go to the West Indies which gave a very good account of itself throughout the tournament. It's just bad luck that their exciting run had to come to an end in the final.
