Sanjay Dutt's Life Journey So Far

He's the original prince of darkness. And perhaps also destiny's child. Or else, Sanjay Dutt would not have been able to rise over the calamities, which struck him. Deeply entrenched in drugs, the death of his mother Nargis came as a double blow.

Further, the flopping of his films made the industry lose their confidence in him. Later, first wife Richa Sharma succumbed to cancer. His alleged involvement with the underworld and divorce with second wife Rhea Pillai made him the perfect candidate for the fallen hero.

And then, came further imprisonment... The redemption?
The Munnabhai series, his third marriage to Maanyata and the birth of twins.

    A potboiler of a life!

Rocky is a run-of-the mill kind of a film. It has every standard ingredient like running around trees, sex, murder, revenge, naach-gaana and plenty of action. Yet, one sits through it mostly out of a sense of curiosity about the Dutt progeny - Sanjay.
    May 1981

Sanjay Dutt got his first cover almost a year after his first film released. Even the cover story was a journalist's take on him and not an interview.

"You should have seen me a year ago. I was so impatient and irritable. That was because of drugs. I was always protected. I always needed and depended on my dear ones. I was weak. In America where I was being treated, I wanted my family but they put their foot down. They forced me to face myself."
    Jan 1985

Sanjay Dutt is understandably naïve and self conscious in Rocky. He will improve with time and maturity. In future, he should concentrate more on emotion and less on action. He revives nostalgic memories of his great mother with his strong resemblance to her.

    '80s
    Cleaning up
To say Sanjay Dutt had a 'rocky' start to his career would be an understatement. Even before the release of his first film, he had quite a reputation. His late nights, drug addiction and womanising ways were known to all. Rumours about Sanjay Dutt going bonkers, that he boozed and ran around with loaded guns, were rife. He was shaken when then girlfriend Tina Munim ditched him. But apparently, he took respite in new girlfriend Rati Agnihotri who helped him cope with all that was wrong in his life. But what she didn't know was that Sanju was also getting close to Rekha.

By now Sanjay Dutt admittedly had been plagued by the drug problem. Father Sunil Dutt was sick of his ways and even sent him to the US to be cleaned up.

When all looked good, rumours suggested that Sanjay had run away from the American hospital he had been admitted to for de-addiction. That he was arrested for drug trafficking also started doing the rounds. There were whispers that he had developed serious liver and kidney trouble. Sunil Dutt later confirmed that his son was getting treated for drug addiction at the Miami hospital and that he was showing the will to regain control over himself.

Sanjay apparently returned a reformed man and was given the clean chit by the producers of Bekaraar. But the film failed, leaving Sanjay still in hot waters. Although Sanjay worked in about 30 films in this decade, the only ones worth a mention were Rocky, Vidhaata and Naam.

"My reputation at home is finished. And if the press goes on writing about my involvements with different women, it will be difficult for me to get married."
    July 1986

Sanjay tried to get his life back on track and started interacting more. But he realised people still thought of him as a junkie.

"After rehab, I sat at home waiting for work. In the evening, I went to Sea Rock hotel to play squash. It was hell. Guys would remark, 'Dekho charsi jaa raha hai saala.' I never lost my temper. Not once. I knew what they were saying was true. Who would have faith in me? I had let people down. But deep down, I had this sense of vengeance. If I got a chance, I'd show them."
    May 1987

By now, Sanjay had sat without work for nine months and had almost packed his bags to go and start a new life in the US when he was signed on again.

"Beginning work after my drug problem wasn't easy. My co-stars were nice but they were condescending, as I was not quite in their league. I began reporting for work on time. Gradually, offers began coming. Naam was the first film, which made people notice me and say, 'Oh! Acting kar leta hai!'"
    May 1987

"It was a pretty bad year for me – my films didn't fare well, one of my lungs was damaged. But then Trishala's (daughter) coming changed everything."

    '90s
    Breaking free
This was the darkest decade for Sanjay. His wife Richa was diagnosed with cancer and left with daughter Trishala to the USA for treatment. His link-up with Madhuri Dixit didn't help his cause either. People started talking about him wanting to divorce Richa.

"I've filed for divorce, huh? I don't know anything about it, all I know is I'm going to the States in some time to visit my wife and daughter. So I'm marrying Madhuri? All this may be okay for me, but it's doing Madhuri a lot of harm. She's a lovely person, from a good family."
    May 1992

The severest blow came when he was put in jail for allegedly possessing arms and having connections with the underworld vis-à-vis the '93 bomb blasts in Mumbai. Although he managed to get bail then, he was arrested again a year later. Trade persons pointed out that showbiz would stand to lose 50 crore. Sanjay had 12 films in various stages of production. By now Richa's family didn't want anything to do with him, and the Mumbai police wasn't letting him leave the country.

"Whenever I'm allowed to, I'll visit Richa in New York. She's been through surgery again. I am pained to read some stories, which have made me out to be a cad. I'd like to bring my baby Trishala home if I'm allowed to. I'd write to her from prison and she'd write back to me, saying that she misses me very much."

Towards the end of the decade, he lost wife Richa to cancer, his relationship with Madhuri Dixit went kaput (thanks to his court case). Much later, he moved in with model Rhea Pillai, and had one of the biggest hits of his career - Vaastav.

"We will tie the knot sometime this year. Marriage or no marriage, Rhea will always be part of me. The wedding ceremony will just be a formality."
    February 1998

After Richa's death Sanjay wanted his daughter Trishala to return but Richa's parents took him to court, leaving him furious.

"Richa's parents played dirty. They filed a case in New York, forbidding me from visiting Trishala. Why did they stop me from visiting my own child? Did they think I was going to kidnap her? They started the war. I'm going to finish it. I've asked my lawyers to help me get visiting rights. I don't need to undergo a DNA test to prove that I'm Trishala's father."
    July 1998

By now, it was a known fact that Sanjay and Madhuri had dated. He broke his silence about her.

"There was terrific chemistry between us on-screen. There was a certain magic in Saajan, Sahibaan and Khal-Nayak. Mahaanta, our last film together, was a disaster because halfway through, MD (Madhuri Dixit) and I stopped talking. Naturally, the film was completed under stress."

    2000s
    A new begining
After Vaastav, the biggest turn in Sanjay's career was the Munnabhai series. The films made him a hero of the masses. It was the final redemption. On the personal front, he again faced the trauma of divorcing second wife Rhea Pillai and losing father Sunil Dutt. But solace came in the form of Maanyata. His marriage to her did cause a temporary rift between Sanjay and his sisters, Priya and Namrata. But the arrival of his twins – Shahraan and Iqra – has brought the family close once again!

"Maanyata's a grounded girl. She's honest and humble. She has her own opinions and is strong in character. I respect her for that. She's helpful. She does a lot for women and children. I see glimpses of my mother in her. Also, whenever mom wouldn't be at home, we'd miss her screaming and shouting. It's the same with Maanyata. It's good to go home to someone. I have lived the life of a gypsy for many years."
    July 2010

The last time I spoke to dad was the night before he passed away. He had slight fever. He asked me to drop in at 10.30 am the next morning. We spoke for a while and then I went to sleep. The next thing I knew, Namrata was waking me up, 'Dad's not getting up.' I rushed and saw him sleeping on the bed. He often slept with his eyes slightly open, with his hands on his chest. I tried waking him up but there was no response. He had gone peacefully in his sleep."

It's great the way the Supreme Court has upheld the law and not bowed down to any pressure of any power to be lenient in the Bombay Blasts case on anyone. But shame on the Indian government for not bringing to justice those who are the main organizers of those horrific attacks 20 years ago.
