Default West Indies, Sri Lanka lock horns in tri-series opener

Eager to leave their Champions Trophy eliminations behind, hosts West Indies and Sri Lanka will square off on Friday in the opening match of the tri-nation one-day series, which also features an in-form India.

West Indies were eliminated in the group stage of the Champions trophy when they lost to South Africa via Duckworth Lewis method while the Lankans were humbled in the semifinals by eventual champions India.

Sri Lanka had beaten Australia and finalists England en route to the knockout stage while the Caribbeans were disfavoured by luck as weather put paid to their hopes in the crucial match against the Proteas.

The teams have come into the tournament with almost the same set of players except that the hosts have left out Ramnaresh Sarwan and Jason Holder. The Lankans were forced to leave out injured opener Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin has re-joined the West Indian side after serving his ban for wrongly claiming a catch against Pakistan in the Champions trophy.

The Lankans have not played much in this part of the world. The last time they competed here was in the 2007 World Cup but the conditions may support their spin-oriented attack, which also has Ajantha Mendis, who of late has been labelled a Twenty20 specialist.

Like Champions Trophy, weather is a matter of concern here too and if rain gods allow a full game, it will be an interesting contest between the West Indies batting and Sri Lankan bowlers.

The spin trio of Ajantha Mendis, Sachithra Senanayake and Rangana Herath will pose a threat to the Caribbeans, who would rely on good starts by the flamboyant Chris Gayle.

The Lankan batting will once again revolve around the ever-reliable senior duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

The Caribbean line-up, led by Dwayne Bravo, is full of potent match-winning all-rounders and the home conditions would give them extra confidence and motivation to do well.

West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson said they were "gutted" with what happened in England but reposed full faith in his players.

"It's to put those silly little mistakes that we made in England, sort of put them away. We felt we had a good opportunity to win that tournament and we want to win this one and prove ourselves right," he said ahead of the clash

Gibson said his "players are taking more responsibility and are starting to believe a lot more" in their ability to do well as a team.

West Indies skipper Dwayne Bravo said confidently that his side has a good chance to win the tournament.

"It's always good to play home in the Caribbean, starting here in Jamaica, (and) we have a good record here. We have Sri Lanka on Friday. We want to start well, aim to get into the final, but it's not going to be easy.

"We respect both teams and their positions, and for me as a captain it is to try and get the guys (playing) as consistently as possible and get them to believe in themselves, believe in each other, so we can play some good cricket and entertain our fans," Bravo said.

Default Bravo looks for fresh start in tri-series after CT debacle

Disappointed with the early exit from the recently-concluded Champions Trophy, West Indies cricket captain Dwayne Bravo said his team would look to make amends for the debacle in the ODI tri-series against India and Sri Lanka starting on Friday.

"We are disappointed at how we exited the Champions Trophy, but I think those who look at the competition closely say that we really gave it our best shot," said Bravo on his arrival here for the series which opens with the hosts taking on Sri Lanka.

"We are now looking forward to this Tri-Nation series, which should be a very tough series, to see if we can make amends and, hopefully, make our fans proud once again," he added.

West Indies could not even make the Champions Trophy semifinals, which concluded in England on Sunday with an unbeaten India winning the trophy.

During the upcoming tri-series, to be played in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, the three teams will play each other twice and the top two will advance to the final.

Bravo said he is happy with the 13-member squad that has been picked for the series.

"It's a balanced squad with a lot of match-winners, who myself and the coaching staff believe can get the job done," said Bravo.

"As to which players we pick to play each match, that will come down to the opposition and the match conditions on the day."

Default How 'Captain Cool' Dhoni did it for India

Triumphant Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he preferred to use a heavy bat in the final over of the Tri-nation ODI series title clash against Sri Lanka as it was "perfect for slogging".
Dhoni almost singlehandedly guided India to yet another ODI title with an unbeaten 45 off 52 balls, 16 off them coming in the last over in their chase of 202."I went with a heavy bat, the weight was perfect for slogging," Man-of-the-Match Dhoni said.
After bowling out Sri Lanka for 201, India rode on Dhoni and Rohit Sharma's half century to chase down the target with two balls to spare at the Queen's Park Oval.
Asked about his penchant for coming good when the chips are down, Dhoni said, "I knew I could get 15 runs off the last over, I'm happy that it worked.”

Rohit Sharma said: "I am really happy with the way we performed. The wicket was not easy to play shots, I wanted to delay my shots and wanted to stay as long as possible in the middle. Regarding the Indian captain's knock, the Mumbaikar said,
"We have seen Dhoni doing it over and over again, so it was not so much of a surprise."
Player of the series was Bhuvneshwar Kumar while Sharma was awarded the Most Trusted Player of the Series.

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews also credited 'dangerous Dhoni'.
"Herath bowled really well to bring us back into the game, but Dhoni is always a dangerous batsman. We played a good tournament throughout, didn't win the title, but the players showed a lot of character," Mathews said.
Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who led the team in three matches in Dhoni's absence, jointly accepted the winners' trophy.
