    1. Ben Affleck - Batman

    © Daily Mirror

    2. Heath Ledger - Joker

    © Warner Bros.
Which brings us to Heath Ledger. When Ledger was chosen to play the Joker in 'The Dark Knight', internet users lambasted the choice loud and clear. Calling him the gay cowboy ('Brokeback Mountain') and saying that he 'has the charisma of a lettuce leaf'; Batman fans dismissed the actor as a bad casting choice. That was till the movie released and minds were blown. The rest is history.

    3. Elizabeth Taylor - Cleopatra

© Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
Going back a couple of decades, 'Cleopatra' (1963) was one of the best movies that year - taking away four Academy Awards. However, casting Elizabeth Taylor - a white woman, in fact, the whitest as they come - to play an African queen raised more than a few eyebrows. The theory in those days was that Cleopatra came from Greece, which has now been disproved.

    4. Daniel Craig - James Bond

    © Eon Productions
Our mental image of James Bond is dark-haired, tall and always radiating conventional good looks. So when Daniel Craig - a blonde, short actor with rugged looks was casted as James Bond, the outrage is expected. He was judged alongside the previous Bonds like Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan - and he came off short (no puns intended) before the release of 'Casino Royale'. After the movie hit the theatres, guess who had the last laugh?

    5. Idris Elba - Heimdall

    © Paramount Pictures
The guardian sentry of Asgard in Norse mythology as well as the comics has always been a white guy in popular imagination. Imagine the shock when Idris Elba, a black dude, was casted as Heimdall in 'Thor' (2011). Racial slurs and underestimation of Elba filled the internet forums - but once the movie released, it proved that the actor had carried off the role beautifully.

    6. Angelina Jolie - Mariane Pearl

    © Paramount Vantage
On the other hand, the wife of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl is of Afro-Chinese-Cuban and Dutch descent. One look at Mariane Pearl and you can tell she is not white. So when Angelina Jolie was casted as Mariane in the biopic 'A Mighty Heart', fans were outraged at the trivialization of race. Jolie may be a good actress, but to fans she ain't nothing but white in the movie.

    7. Tom Cruise - Lestat de Lioncourt

    © Geffen Pictures
The character is from the novel 'Interview With the Vampire' by Anne Rice, which was adapted into a movie in 1994. Anne Rice was not amused when the makers chose Tom Cruise to play her protagonist, Lestat de Lioncourt. However, when the movie released and Cruise got rave reviews for his performance, Rice had to eat humble pie.

    8. Johnny Depp - Willy Wonka

    © Warner Bros.
Whether you read 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' or you watched the first adaptation of 1971, where Gene Wilder played Willy Wonka, or done neither - you have to admit that Johnny Depp was a fantastic Wonka. The controversy lay in the fact that Tim Burton casted Depp in one of his movies - yet again! Also, living up to Wilder's performance is no easy task. The original Wonka is still alive in popular imagination - look at all the memes!

    9. Sofia Coppola - Mary Corleone

    © Paramount Pictures
Talk about nepotism in cinema! Francis Ford Coppola is still haunted by his mistake of casting his daughter Sofia as Mary Corleone in 'The Godfather' finale, after actresses like Winona Ryder and Julia Roberts declined the role. It would have worked, even if it smacked of the aforementioned nepotism, had Sofia actually been able to pull it off. But her performance was terrible - one shining red blot in a movie series that commands a cult following.

    10. Topher Grace - Eddie Brock

    © Columbia Pictures
No matter how much you loved the 'Spiderman' movies, you have to admit that the last one went off not in a bang, but a whimper - an embarrassing end to a brilliant trilogy. If you have read the comics, you know that Eddie Brock/Venom is a square-chinned athletic figure. Exactly what Topher Grace was not. The 'That 70's Show' actor was awkward as a psychopathic super-villain - and the comic book fans were very livid.
While most of these actors have passed the litmus test of performance, putting all badmouthing and cynicism to rest - others have not been so lucky. We cannot wait to see how Ben Affleck portrays Batman. After Heath Ledger's instance, we might not want to write off Affleck just yet.
