    Sex Comedies in Bollywood

Watching a sex comedy with your group of buddies is time well spent. It is always fun watching fantasies from your adolescence come alive on screen. Nothing can crack us men up more than parents walking in on their son humping a pie. The genre is not new to Hollywood. We've all spent our childhoods sneaking out of our rooms and watching it while our parents had been fast asleep upstairs.

Finally, Bollywood has dared to venture into the risqué territory too. Even though filmmakers still haven't developed much sexually explicit humour in their films, we're glad it has at least begun. And to shout it out loud, no matter how good or bad a sex comedy may be, we watch every single one of them!

So, here's a list of all the sex comedies that have come our way in Bollywood.

Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai (2002) - Directed by a certain Hansal Mehta and starring some lesser-known actors like Aamir Malik, Yash Pandit, Payal Rohtagi and some more forgettable ones, the film was based on a group of four young students wanting to get themselves 'girlfriends' (read laid). A taboo to even mention, let alone extracting humour of it, the protagonists' quest for 'sex' was only subtly hinted. A lot of scenes were inspired from Hollywood's best sex comedy ever, 'American Pie' and simmered down to not cause a shock to the Indian audiences. It was a very feeble effort, but it did initiate the 'unthinkable' in India.

Oops! (2003) - Deepak Tijori brought to us another sex comedy in 2003. For budgetary concerns and the expected inhibitions put forth by A-listers, the film starred forgettable faces like Kiran Janjani, Vikas Sethi, Adyasha and Mita Vashishtha. The film centred around a group of three friends, one of whom gets lured into the act of stripping for easy money. The stripper enjoys his profession at first, but later finds it hampering his love life. The humour may not have across as strongly as one would expect from a sex comedy, but the film did attempt at taking a light-heartedly humorous approach dealing with a bold and brave subject.

Mumbai Matinee (2003) - Comprising of a list of actors who never shied away from any sort of roles like Rahul Bose and Saurabh Shukla, this movie revolves around a 30 year old guy who has 'never done it'. Desperate as you may imagine, he confides in his two friends and the three set out to get him bedded. In a serious of hilarious embarrassing situations, the protagonist fails to lose his virginity. He finds himself starring in a porn film and sinks into sexual frustration. The film dealt with a strong subject quite effortlessly, still managing to evoke laughs time and again. The film was appreciated by the critics but did not fare well at the box office because of obvious reasons.

Masti (2004) & Grand Masti (2013) - Indra Kumar's Masti was immensely popular among the masses and chances are, that you've seen it more than once. It lived well up to the tag of the boldest Indian sex comedy, the year it released. Not only was it blatantly raunchy, it was outright hilarious. There were some low points in the film, of course because of the presence of an obligatory preachy moral sermon throughout, but the situations the protagonists face while trying too hard to woo a certain miss-hot-legs were fairly enjoyable. The film released its sequel last month. 'Grand Masti' was vulgar beyond repair. In an attempt to live up to the expectations set on him, Indra Kumar crossed the line between bold and crass. Started off well, but didn't know where to stop. Slammed by critics for out rightly objectifying women, the film still received a good opening at the box office.

Kya Kool Hain Hum (2005) & Kya Super Kool Hain Hum (2012) - Following the success of 'Masti', Ekta Kapoor borrowed Ritesh Deshmukh, pitched him alongside brother, Tusshar Kapoor and directed the first instalment of this series. While 'Masti' majorly relied on dialogues to display humour, this film took it up a notch higher and presented the humour equally through visuals. The film was still fairly received by the masses. Ekta Kapoor came up with the second instalment seven years later. The film had a plot thinner than Kareena's waist and the sexual innuendos were more outdated than Priety Zinta's 'Ishkq In Paris'.

Mixed Doubles (2006) - Rajat Kapoor released his sex-comedy-labelled-as-comedy-drama 'Mixed Doubles' starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Ranvir Shorey and Koel Puri. The film discussed the issue of wife-swapping. Another example of a film well appreciated but not noticed enough, this film tackles the subject of a couple wanting to jazz up their sex lives. The film did have some funny parts, though it was mainly appreciated for the performances by the actors.

Mirch (2010) - Konkona Sen Sharma tried her hands at sex comedy once again with 'Mirch'. A writer narrating four stories, with different settings, all erotic in their own humorous way forms the premise of the film. The kind of humour the film conveyed did not garner too many laughs. The film disappointed one and all and was soon forgotten. But the film touched new grounds by portraying women as the adulterers, for the first time in the aforementioned genre in Indian cinema, and that too, very unapologetically.

Delhi Belly (2011) - Though 'Delhi Belly' doesn't fit into the category of sex comedies as snugly as the other ones on this list, it surely did stand out for its sexual innuendos and crude dialogues. Some critics felt the film was distasteful for the excessive use of abuses and shameless implications in its script, but most of the audiences found uproarious, nonetheless. The film was slammed by many for its cheap content, but the masses carried it to the number one spot soon after its release. Bollywood may not have quite gotten the drift of it, considering how unwelcome most of these films have been, but it definitely seems to be on the right track.
