Thumbs down Shias in UP seek Azam Khan's removal

Lucknow: The Shias here have asked Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to clear ambiguities in Waqf Board appointments, allegedly been done at the behest of Urban Development and Wakf Minister Azam Khan.

A meeting between Shia cleric Kalb-e-Jawwad and the chief minister took place late Wednesday in which the issue was discussed.

Sources said the Shia community is divided over the appointments, alleging that Azam Khan was bribed for them.

"The people being appointed to the board are corrupt and would lead to large scale malpractises," Kalb-e-Jawwad told IANS.

He sought an immediate and convincing response from the state government on the matter and said he has given a five-point charter of demands to the chief minister. One of its demands is to take the Waqf department out of Khan's control.

He also said he has been assured that "no injustice" will be done.

Violence had erupted in the city when a Shia protest march proceeding towards the minister's house was intercepted by police. In the clashes later, one person was killed and many were injured, leading to tensions on the day of Alvida Namaaz - the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Shia cleric Jawwad accuses Azam Khan of sparking communal riots in UP

Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad fired a fresh salvo at Minority Affairs Minister Azam Khan on Monday, saying that the senior Samajwadi Party leader was behind the recent communal riots in Uttar Pradesh.

"A very senior minister in the SP government is behind the communal riots in the state. But now he wants the Shias and Sunnis to fight over the Waqf property.
"This is why he is creating obstacles on the way of the Board elections. I have decided to hold a protest in Lucknow on August 23 in which clerics will participate. We will decide the details of the Board elections," Jawwad said in Kanpur.

Contest: Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan (left) and Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad (right) are believed to be locked in a one-upmanship battle to establish their importance in the ruling SP party

"The minister wanted to hold the elections according to his plan. But the Chief Minister postponed it on my request. He has failed in his game plan. Now the Chief Minister must suspend him from the government," the cleric demanded.

Jawwad and Khan have been involved in verbal spat for quite some time. While the Shia Waqf Board elections have turned into a bone of contention between the two Muslim leaders, political observers feel Jawwad and Khan are locked in one-upmanship to establish their importance in the ruling party.
Azam Khan had fixed August 12 for the Waqf elections, but Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had snubbed him and postponed the polls for indefinite time on Jawwad's request.

"As a student of LLM in Aligarh Muslim University, Khan was caught in the female hostel on the campus in September 1975.
"An inquiry was ordered and he was finally rusticated from there on October 6, 1975," Jawwad alleged.

In reaction to the latest allegation against him, Khan claimed the cleric was selling off Waqf property.
"The Maulana is selling out the Waqf property. While the zealots demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, the Maulana welcomed some of them the same day to the marriage ceremony of his daughter.
"He didn't feel like postponing the function on that day. But now, he doesn't want to hold the Board elections because he wants to steal its wealth," Azam said.
