Tamil Nadu has 1cr more voters in 2016, sees 22% jump in 4 years

CHENNAI: One crore more people have registered to vote in Tamil Nadu since the last assembly elections. In a multicornered election, these additional voters could be gamechangers. In 2011, the vote differential between the AIADMK front and the DMK alliance was around 50 lakh.

In a state where the population growth rate is declining, first time voters number only 6 lakh in the 2016 polls -not enough to explain the 1 crore increase.

Better voter registration could be a key reason for the jump. In 2011, the voting population was just about 71% of the total state population. This year, four out of every five persons in TN are voters.

The state election commission is stressing on improved registration efforts. TN chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni told TOI that for the first time the commission sent SMSes to nearly 8 lakh applicants who had provided their mobile phone numbers at the time of applying for including their names or for corrections.”IDs for the new electors are being printed and will be delivered through booth-level officers by February 10,” Lakhoni said.

But others also discuss migration. “An increase of 10% to 12% is typical between two assembly polls. The 22% spike is also coming from voters who have migrated to TN for work registering their names in the electoral rolls,” former chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar told TOI. The increase was evident in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls also, when some 66 lakh voters were added to the rolls compared to 2011.

“In the last five years, more people from Bihar, Jharkhand and other states have settled in Chennai and other cities for construction work. They have registered their names in the state’s electoral rolls in large numbers,” said population expert P Arokiasamy . More than 3.85 lakh names have been deleted a some voters have died and in other cases the names of the same person were duplicated.

“The period of continuous revision is in operation now Eligible people not finding their names on the electoral rolls can apply for inclusion we encourage people to apply online,” said Lakhoni. People who are interested in including their names can do so up to seven days before the last date of withdrawal of candidature. This list will be a supplementary list to the final electoral roll, he said.

All first-time voters will be given an information brochure called voter guide with EPICs. The voter guide contains necessary information regarding registration and voting processes in an easily understandable manner, he said.

    The Man who revolutionized !

First in the country to be from a non-Congress party to form a government with full majority !

    Facts & Quotes :

Dr. C. N. Annadurai, fondly called Anna by millions of Tamilians, was one of the most charismatic leader of modern India.

Born on 15 sep 1909 into a weaving caste family in Kanchipuram, Annadurai rose to become a school teacher and journalist before switching into hard-core politics.

Anna was Chief Minister barely for two years (1967-69) but he is still remembered for his qualities – simplicity, statesmanship, political acumen and concern for the poor and willingness for reconciliation.

    • 1) In his college days, Anna was exposed to the non-Brahmin politics of the Justice Party and drawn towards Justice Party headed by the radical thinker Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.
    • 2) One of the stalwart of the Dravidian movement, Anna attacked Brahminism and ‘Aryan’ values as the cause of Tamil political and cultural decadence.
    • 3) Anna founded the most famous Dravidian party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK), in the year 1949, after a fall out with his mentor Periyar.
    • 4) A great orator, script writer, theatre personality and journalist, Anna skilfully channelized the agitation against imposition of Hindi the official language of India.
    • 5) In 1967, DMK’s swept assembly polls thus ending Congress dominance in the state and Anna was sworn in as Chief Minister of Madras state. Notably, his cabinet was the youngest in India then.
    • 6) Annadurai is credited with renaming Madras state as Tamil Nadu in 1969. It was during his tenure as chief minister , the state assembly passed a bill renaming the state.
    • 7) Once in Yale University, USA, a native speaker of English asked Anna a quirky question: Can you construct a sentence in English by using because three times in it? The instantaneous response from Dr. C. N. Annadurai was: No sentence ends in because, because, because is a conjunction
    • 8) Anna’s famous ‘Two dogs Theory’ against imposition of Hindi as official language of India : “Since every school in India teaches English, why can't it be our link language? Why do Tamils have to study English for communication with the world and Hindi for communications within India? Do we need a big door for the big dog and a small door for the small dog? I say, let the small dog use the big door too! All that is needed is the big door. Both the big and the small dog could use it!”
    • 9) Anna was never against the political unity of India but was a strong advocator for maximum autonomy to the States. The abdication of the secessionist demand in wake of the Chinese aggression was another example of his political acumen.
    • 10) The largest funeral attendance in history is widely thought to have happened in 1969 when 15 million people reportedly took to the streets of Chennai for CN Annadurai.

    Game Changed :

Senior Congress leader Gulam Nabi Azad on Saturday formally announced that the party will fight the Assembly polls in an alliance with the DMK.

"Our main goal is to put in place a government led by the DMK," he said after meeting DMK president M. Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai.

Mr. Azad said the DMK leadership will identify other potential allies and initiate talks. On whether there would be a coalition government after polls, he said such "small things" do not matter at the moment.

On seat sharing, he said further talks would take place with DMK.

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin said "Congress has promised full cooperation. Mr. Karunanidhi has already given an invite to DMDK. We are hopeful of a positive response".
