Default 16-year-old girl among 3 J&K 'stone-pelters' killed in Army firing

SRINAGAR: On the eve of the second death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani, three civilians including a teenage girl were killed and at least five others injured after security forces opened fire on a stone-pelting mob in Mishipora area of south Kashmir?s Kulgam district on Saturday.
Though separatists alleged that security forces opened fire without any provocation, the Mishipora eyewitnesses said the mob was trying to help the terrorists escape from the village where they were hiding and engaged in an encounter with the security forces.
According to reports, the terrorists managed to flee following intense stone pelting from their sympathisers. The forces opened fire on the riotous mob, injuring several people. The injured were taken to Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Frisal in the district where three among them were declared brought dead, residents said. The deceased were identified as Shakir Ahmad Khanday (22), Irshad Ahmad (20) and Andleeb Jan (16). Two other individuals are stated to be stable.

A defence spokesperson said, ?An Area Domination Patrol (ADP) of Army while moving in general area Hawoora, Kulgam came under heavy stone pelting. As the ADP tried to extricate, they were chased by an aggressive and menacing crowd of 400-500 persons which kept building up and coming dangerously close.?
?Troops while exercising extreme restraint, cautioned the stone pelters, who, however, failed to relent and repeatedly threw petrol bombs and stones at the patrolling party. At one point of time, some unidentified terrorists also fired on the column. This resulted in some soldiers receiving grievous injuries. In response to this grave provocation and to ensure the security of own troops, controlled firing was resorted to by the Army, which resulted in unfortunate loss of human lives. The matter is being investigated to ascertain facts on ground,? he said. A police official said that it has initiated an investigation into the incident.
Reports said around a dozen funeral prayers were held for the slain civilians at a school ground in Hawoora village. While thousands of people participated in the prayers, a group of armed terrorists appeared at the funeral, offering a gun-salute to the dead, eyewitnesses said. Anticipating mob violence, the administration suspended internet services in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts in south Kashmir.

Meanwhile, a partial shutdown was observed across the Valley to protest against the arrest of the Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi and her associates by the NIA. The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, had given a call for shutdown in view of the second anniversary of Wani who was killed in an encounter along with his two associates in Bumdoora village of Kokernag area of South Kashmir?s Anantnag district on July 8, 2016.
All the shops, business establishments, educational institutes remained closed and the traffic was thin on the roads through the day. Authorities also suspended the train services across Kashmir and announced to impose partial restrictions in some areas of Srinagar on Sunday. Officials said that the restrictions would be imposed in the district falling under the jurisdiction of seven police stations including Khanyar, Nowahatta, Safa Kadal, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Kral Khud and Maisuma.
Expressing deep anguish on the loss of civilian lives, Governor NN Vohra held an emergency meeting with Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, Northern Army Commander and asked the Army to avoid incidents of civilian casualties and collateral damage, even in situations of extreme provocation.

Stone pellets should be shot. You can kill with a stone. Army should be given specific instructions to defend themselves at any cost.
