Post Queen of all she surveys - Article in Indian Express

Rani Mukerji on chemistry, co-stars and infidelity

    Indian Express Article on Rani

Lucknow, August 18: Don’t you just hate cliches? But sometimes, there is just no escaping them. Currently, Rani Mukerji is the reigning queen of the marquee. Cliched as it might sound, she is numero uno. After her stupendous showings in flicks like Hum Tum, Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, Veer-Zaara, Black and Paheli, there is not much left that Mukerji can’t do. And now with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK), her position will only get more strengthened.

In an exclusive interview, the actor took out time from her Babul schedule to speak about KANK and her friendship with its director Karan Johar.

So finally, Karan Johar has done justice to you by giving you a full- fledged role in KANK?
I don’t think like that. Friends aren’t expected to do something for you. They don’t have to justify their friendship. My relationship with Karan is beyond just films. Maybe, he finally found a role which he felt only I could do and so he offered me KANK. When I make a friend, it’s for life. Karan is a part of my life and just a phone call away.

What kind of a character is Maya in KANK?
Maya has lots of layers to her. She hardly speaks in the film and expresses her pain, longing, happiness and hurt through her eyes. Really, her expressions are louder than her words. She goes through a realisation phase when she takes a stand on what she wants. Maya is looking for one great love. Probably, that love is not in the form of the perfect man. The film is the story of how she finds that great love.

What was the best part of playing a character like Maya?
I don’t think such a part has ever been written for an actress in today’s generation. You see, KANK is a very niche film but it can easily become a cult film. Not many films have spoken about relationships so openly. Maya is a character who is torn between two simultaneous relationships in her life. That was a challenge.

But you’ve always played this ‘perfect woman’ kind of roles in most of your films. Do you think the audience will accept you leaving your husband for a lover in KANK?
See, KANK isn’t just about husband leaving his wife and vice versa. It’s about people who lead honest lives and face tough cir***stances.

But doesn’t this role push the envelope a little, seen in the context of mainstream films, that is?
Yes, that it does. But then, as an actor I’m supposed to play different characters. People like Maya exist in society. It’s just that such a character hasn’t been shown on-screen before. This is my chance of doing something new again, in the context of mainstream films.

What is the best thing about acting in a Karan Johar film?
You get to do really good scenes. Karan knows his characters and their graph very well. He stands by his beliefs and knows what he wants to say. In KANK, he has outdone himself. Also, the women in his films look great. He really works hard on the costumes. He’s so enthusiastic that sometimes he even shops himself or tells the designers to buy stuff from exclusive stores such whose name is unheard of in India.

Like you said about Maya, are you also looking for that one great love?
Not really, because there is a time for everything. When something has to happen, it will happen only then. So there is no point in waiting for it or longing for it. Anyway, you have to meet someone, find him interesting, understand him and only then can he become the perfect guy.

Who do you think you share better on-screen chemistry with, Shah Rukh Khan or Abhishek Bachchan?
I think with Shah Rukh, our chemistry is more like that of pure love, you know, more of a romantic chemistry. While with Abhishek, I’m on back-slapping terms. It’s like a buddy-buddy chemistry. As to who I look the best with, it depends on the film and the characters.

This is your fourth film with Preity Zinta. How is that chemistry coming along?
Pretty well. Unfortunately, in KANK, we have very few scenes together. It’s nice to have someone on the set who brings positive vibes. Both of us are quite spontaneous and very comfortable with each other.
