Rs 1 lakh to let daughters live

But while Rs one lakh will accrue automatically if the girl child is not married before turning major, her parents can avail of the rest of amount only if they fulfill certain conditions. They will be required not merely to take good care of their daughters but also see to it that they are not forced into marriage before they turn 19 and ensure 80% attendance in school.

Default Anil may soon be world's richest man

Anil may soon be world's richest man

With his wealth estimated at more than $57 billion, Anil Dhirubhai Ambani has emerged as India's wealthiest citizen after the blockbuster IPO of his Reliance Power, and all indications are that he may jump to the top of the global rich list as well. The value of Anil's holdings in seven listed entities will be around Rs 229,363 crore or $57.

3 billion at last Friday's closing price, taking into account the price of a Reliance Power share at Rs 450 per share, the cut-off price of the public issue which closed on Friday. Market experts expect Reliance Power to list at a much higher value.

If the stock lists at Rs 900, Ambani will jump over Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexican telecom tycoon who topped last year's rich list with an estimated $67.8 billion to his account according to Forbes magazine.

At Rs 900 per share, Anil Ambani's personal wealth would be estimated at Rs 2,75,000 crore or $68.7 billion.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates followed Carlos Slim last year with an estimated wealth of $59.2 billion.

Anil's elder brother Mukesh Ambani, who runs the largest corporation in the country, Reliance Industries Ltd, which has a market cap of Rs 434,170 crore, will now slip to number two in the rich list. The value of his personal wealth is estimated at Rs 218,860 crore or $54.

7 billion as per the last closing price. Although much depends upon the market dynamics, experts feel that at least three Indians - the Ambani Brothers and steel baron Lakshmi Mittal - are expected to make in the top 10 richest.

Default Rahman to sing for Kailash Kher’s Music

Rahman to sing for Kailash Kher’s Music

Singer Kailash Kher, who is known as the blue-eyed boy of music director AR Rahman, is all set to rope him in for a project. Kher wants Rahman to perform the title track of the film Allah Ke Bande, which he has composed.

This will be the first time that Rahman will lend his voice to tunes composed by someone else. The film also marks the debut of the trio Kailash-Paresh-Naresh of the band Kailasa as composers.

“He has already heard the tune and the lyrics of the song and was impressed with it when we went to meet him last month. He asked us to complete the song. We will go to Chennai next week,” says an excited Kher.

Is Rahman going to sing the song finally?

Default Bruni says not married to Sarkozy(French President) ...yet

Bruni says not married to Sarkozy...yet

Carla Bruni has 'not yet' married French President Nicolas Sarkozy and does not plan to accompany him on an official visit to India later this week, the singer and former supermodel said in an interview.

However, the Italian-born Bruni was quoted by Liberation newspaper as saying that she and the president were planning on tying the knot, although she gave no details.

The couple's whirlwind romance has sparked intense media interest, and has been blamed in part on a slump in popularity for Sarkozy, with voters unhappy about his ostentatious private life at a time when the economy is struggling.

There has been speculation that she would accompany the divorced Sarkozy to India for an official visit later this week in what would have represented a challenge to protocol.

India remains deeply conservative about divorce and extra-marital relationships and concerns that Bruni might join the delegation have overshadowed the build up to the trip.

Sarkozy, 52, hinted at a news conference earlier this month that he would marry Bruni and added that the media would probably find out about it after the event.

Regional daily L'Est Republicain reported last week that they had wed in private, sparking a fresh round of media frenzy.

Bruni was quoted as saying on Tuesday she was 'not yet married'. The paper said she sent text messages to friends last week telling them that the report of the secret wedding was false, calling the rumours 'a hurricane of madness'.

She also said she was not planning to accompany Sarkozy on an official visit to New Delhi on January 25-26.

''I cannot take part in an official visit with the president,'' she said, adding that she needed to be in France [Images] because she was starting to record a new album in February.

Bruni also denied reports that even if she skipped the official part of the trip she might still have hooked up with Sarkozy for a swift visit to the Taj Mahal [Images] at the end of his stay in nearby New Delhi.

"I am not going to spend the afternoon in India," she said, joking that air travel wasn't fun. "It's not good for your health either," she was quoted as saying.

However, Liberation said Sarkozy was still pushing hard for Bruni to join him and had held up the release of the official list of French delegates in the hope she might change her mind.

The paper said the confusion had upset India, adding that his hosts 'were fed up with Sarkozy's bad manners'.

Indian newspapers have revelled in the protocol conundrum, with reports wondering if Sarkozy and his girlfriend might share the same plush suite or where she should be seated at the official banquet with Indian president Pratibha Patil .

Role reversal, well that will something to watch out for although I'm not a big fan of Rahman the singer but he is a damn good music composer

Rupee Weakens To 39.55 A Dollar
The rupee turned weak and was quoted lower by about seven paise against the US currency at Rs 39.55/56 a dollar in morning trade on heavy dollar demand amid weakness in equity markets, which fell back after a strong start.

Despite weakness in dollar against major currencies in overseas market after the US Federal Reserve announced a surprise rate cut by 75 basis point on Tueday, the Indian unit came under pressure due to dollar purchases by banks.

In active trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the rupee resumed better at Rs 39.40/43 a dollar on the back of a strong bounce in equity market in early trading session this morning.

It, however, fell back to Rs 39.55/56 in late morning deals against previous close of Rs 39.4850/4950 as the market failed to hold initial gains

Default Request to confer Bharat Ratna on Mata Amritanandamayi

Request to confer Bharat Ratna on Mata Amritanandamayi

Kochi, Jan 16 (UNI) Adding to the increasing list of recommendations for the coveted 'Bharat Ratna', Kerala-based cultural and service organisation 'Bharatiya Janapaksham' has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to consider Mata Amritanandamayi for the country's highest honour.

'' The social service rendered by Amritanandamayi, popularly known as Amma, was unparalelled in post-Independent India and she had relentlessly worked for the uplift of the marginalised sections of the society,'' said Janapaksham President Puthezhathu Ramachandran.

Besides social work, Amma had made valuable contribution in the field of medical care and education, he added.

'' She was instrumental in the timely completion of the rehabilitation project initiated by her Mutt for the tsunami victims,'' he noted.

'Bharatiya Janapaksham' is the cultural wing of 'Kerala Janapaksham', a political party floated by former BJP leader K Raman Pillai last year.

Lanka Unveils "Trail of Ramayana" Tour Package

NEW DELHI, INDIA, January 17, 2008: With an eye on its "primary source market", Sri Lanka Tourism officials have identified 50 sites associated with the Hindu epic Ramayana to attract more pilgrim travellers from India to the island nation.

"Following the Trail of Ramayana" is a touristic circuit based on research findings that link the sites to Lord Ram, Sita and the demon king Ravana, SLT director-general S. Kalaiselvam told reporters on Thursday while unveiling the ambitious thematic program. "Currently we are taking steps to develop and restore all sites to facilitate foreign and local visitors the opportunity to witness and experience the sacredness of these sites," he said.

The programme includes places like Seethaeliya, Ram Bodha, Ussangoda and Roomassala and special temples in areas where Ravana is believed to have held Sita captive. Kalaiselvam said the "Ramayana epic is a very special feature in the bond that we have with India and we are trying to offer opportunity to our friends here to visit Sri Lanka to explore, absorb and enjoy the various places of significance present in the epic".
