    Default The name is Craig...

Daniel Craig faced a backlash from 007 fans when he was cast as the new Bond in 'Casino Royale'. But he proved his critics wrong and came out with all guns blazing

When Casino Royale producers announced Daniel Craig would take over as the new James Bond, fans were left shaken and stirred. Best known for his literary-minded roles in films such as Enduring Love, The Mother and Steven Spielberg’s Munich, Craig was seen as being too blonde and too serious to be given the "license to kill".

Fortunately for Craig, the producers thought otherwise. “As soon as we met him, Daniel was the obvious choice for James Bond,” says producer Barbara Broccoli. “He is charismatic, versatile and sexy. The role is a big challenge, but he has proven to us that he is an incredible Bond.”

He also proved it to audiences, who helped make 'Casino Royale' the most successful Bond film ever. The film earned a worldwide gross of US$594mil, topping the previous record held by 2002’s 'Die Another Day'.

Based on the original novel by Ian Fleming, 'Casino Royale' sees Bond on the trail Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), a banker who launders money to the world’s terrorists. In order to stop him and bring down the terrorist network, Bond must beat Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game at 'Casino Royale'. He’s accompanied by Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a treasury official who is assigned to deliver his stake for the game and watch over the government’s money. After the pair survive a series of lethal attacks by Le Chiffre, a mutual attraction develops that leads them to further danger and events that will shape Bond’s life forever.

After you got the role, did you look at the previous Bond films for ideas?
Look, I’ve got the box set and I went through them religiously. I had to, you know, for tips. I just wanted to go through them and there was stuff that Sean (Connery) did and stuff that Roger (Moore) did and all the people did that were their little keys and you go ‘Oh, that’s cute, the way they did that.’ Not something conscious to deliberately do, but just to have a mental note of it that when you are doing stuff so that there is some continuity.

Why do you think the Bond franchise has been so successful for so long?
(The late Bond producer) Cubby Broccoli was such a showman, and that played a huge part. And Bond is a classic hero, a guy who says ‘I’m going to get the job done, and this is how I’m going to do it. I don’t care about your rules!’ And that was such an exciting thing. Women wanted to sleep with him and men wanted to be with him. The honest answer, though, is that I think Cubby Broccoli said from the start, ‘This doesn’t die.’

How did you want audiences to see Bond?

I wanted the audience to question him. Is he right to do this stuff? I always want to try to figure out someone’s motives and when we see that I can go, ‘Oh I get it, there was no other way.’ I wanted the audience to have to think about that, about why Bond does what he does.

You look incredibly buff. How did you prepare?

Through a lot of hard work. If I hadn’t been fit, I wouldn’t have survived. I was desperate to try and do as many of the stunts as possible. Of course, there was some stuff that I just don’t have the skills to do, but I was always presented with these little challenges and I just had to conquer them.

It must have been reassuring to have someone like Martin Campbell, who had worked on 'Golden Eye', in charge of the film.

Yes, it is because I know that everybody around me is doing their best as well. We had some of the most skilled people in the world working on this movie, producing something special.

Were there times when you looked up and thought, ‘Oh wow, I’m in the middle of a Bond movie?’

Oh, of course. Actually, there were lots of times when that happened when we were filming on the 007 stage at Pinewood. Chris Corbould, our special effects guy, created the amazing Venetian set that sinks into water. It was fantastic working on that. That’s when you say to yourself, ‘This is a real Bond moment.’ There were plenty of moments like that when I was driving the Aston Martin DBS around.

Our love is as sweet as the first breath of spring.
That inspires the birds and starts them to sing.
Our love is as warm as a summery day,
That brings on the laughter of children at play.
Our love in the Autumn takes on a new hue
Just like the trees with their colors so new.
Our love is so beautiful, it sets me aglow
Like a wintery day after the first fallen snow.
The world at its best is how I compare
This wonderful, heavenly love that we share.
