Default Whats in a name? - Celebrity Nicknames

    What's In A Name?
The more famous a celebrity these days, the more likely they'll be lumped with an unflattering nickname. Many famous monikers are forms of ridicule - such as Mucca, Wino and Wacko Jacko - while some, like Goldenballs, are terms of endearment and many others are downright bizarre. Ever wondered why James Smith calls himself LL Cool J? Or if Madonna actually likes being called Madge? From J'Lo to Brangelina to The Governator, check out celebrity nicknames and their meanings and origins, below. Do you find celebrity nicknames nice or nauseating?

    Amy 'Wino' Winehouse

The term is used in slang when referring to alcoholics, often homeless, who drink cheap wine. So it's unsurprising that Amy 'Wino' Winehouse isn't exactly ecstatic about this affectionate (?) nickname the tabloids have bestowed upon her.

    'Goldenballs'
David Beckham looked mortified when Victoria Beckham revealed live on air to Michael Parkinson that her pet name for her talented husband was Goldenballs. That was in 2001 and Becks has yet to live the nickname down.

    'Mucca'
The Sun is probably the worst offender when it comes to referring to Heather Mills as Mucca. The name is a twist on ex-husband Sir Paul McCartney's nickname of Macca, and really came to the fore in blanket coverage of her nasty divorce battle with the much-loved Beatle. Mills has since said she finds the nickname extremely offensive.

    'Mimi'
At the end of 2004, the title of Mariah Carey's new album, The Emancipation Of Mimi, was leaked to the press and many wanted an explanation for her choice. Carey explained that Mimi was "a very personal nickname only used by those closest to me" but the attention-seeking diva obviously felt it time to share it with the world.

    'The Governator'
In 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor of California and was re-elected in 2006 to serve a full term. Arnie's nickname, The Governator, is a collaboration of his role as governor and his previous life as an action hero in The Terminator.

    'Wacko Jacko'
The nickname 'Wacko Jacko' was first used by tabloids in the mid 1980s and has stuck, despite Michael Jackson's protests. People began to refer to the troubled singer as Wacko Jacko around about the time he was accused of child molestation. It also refers to Jackson's ever-changing appearance.

    Kevin 'Fed-X' Federline

When Britney Spears dumped Kevin Federline (or K-Fed as he liked to be called), gossip columns instantly dubbed him Fed-X, after the US-based delivery company. The wannabe rap artist has since proved to be a good father to his sons with Spears, but the derogatory nickname has stuck.

    'Brangelina'
They are one of the most famous couples in the world, both movie stars in their own right and currently raising six children together: they are Brangelina. The celebrity 'super couple' were dubbed this portmanteau when speculation grew over their relationship during the filming of Mr & Mrs Smith, even though Brad was married at the time to Jennifer Aniston. The couple detest the moniker but it's not likely to go away...

    'TomKat'
Another 'super couple', Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are not short of media attention as both parties are A-listers in their own right. The couple were lumped with the nickname of TomKat after they began a relationship in 2005 and quickly became joined at the hip.

    'Madge'
When Madonna moved to Britain in the late 1990s to be with husband Guy Ritchie, she was bemused to find that the local tabloids had dubbed her 'Madge'. At first, the Material Girl hated the name and didn't allow Ritchie to call her by it, but since finding out that the name was short for 'Your Majesty', Madonna was apparently quite happy to settle for it.

    'Bottler Brown'
After Gordon Brown failed to call an early election in October 2007, Conservatives lead protests outside Downing Street dressed in huge brown bottles, with the slogan 'Bottler Brown' written on them. Throughout his political history many have accused Brown of lacking courage, and this incident, now referred to as the 'non-election', was one step too far for the Conservatives.

    David 'The Hoff' Hasselhoff
'Don't Hassle the Hoff' is once of David Hasselhoff's own catchphrases, from which people simply call him 'The Hoff'. The legendary actor even owns the trademark to this valuable nickname.

    Lindsay 'LiLo' Lohan
When Lindsay Lohan was on her downward spiral (a stint behind bars and three rehab visits in under a year), the party-loving actress was dubbed Li-Lo by the press. Lindsay is currently rumoured to be dating DJ Samantha Ronson who has, creatively, had her name shortened to SamRo by the inventive tabloids.
