    Which was your best holiday?

We went to Phuket a couple of years ago with the children and another family and had a fantastic time. We stayed at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, a five-star resort in an idyllic beach setting.

The rooms and suites are elegantly designed with polished wood floors, rich silks and private balconies that overlook the Mai Khao Beach. There are elephant treks and the “James Bond islands” nearby, not to mention an abundance of fake designer handbags. The girls are growing up fast and we won’t have family holidays with them for ever, so we make the most of them — the holiday in Phuket was one of the best.

And the best hotel you’ve stayed in?

The Residence in Mauritius. Grant and I got engaged there. It is furnished in a simple colonial style and has commanding views of the Indian Ocean.

Other favourite hotels include the Four Seasons for fantastic spas and the Gran Hotel Son Net in Majorca, which is a delightful boutique hotel nestling on a hilltop.

What do you need for a perfect holiday?

I love boating holidays. We used to have a Sunseeker and have enjoyed some great family holidays in the South of France, Majorca and Ibiza. I call it “posh caravanning” and it appeals to my Gemini nature.

What do you always take with you?

I like to take an extension lead as plugs often tend to be on the wrong side of the room.

What’s the best piece of travel advice you have?

Do some research on where you’re going and you’ll be a lot wiser about the location when you arrive. If it’s a long flight, take some things to keep you occupied, such as a portable DVD player, an iPod and some books. If you’re not keen on airline food, pack a few nibbles for the journey.

Where do you want to go next?

I’d like to return to Estancia Los Potreros . It’s an exclusive 6,000-acre estate that’s situated at an altitude of 3,000 feet, on top of the Sierras Chicas in Argentina. It’s in the region of Córdoba, which has great wildlife, stunning scenery and is ideal for people who like riding and polo. It’s lovely to explore the area on horseback and ride from one estancia to another. Other ''must visit’’ places include the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, the Cook Islands and Alaska.

    Which was your worst holiday?

A package holiday in Tunisia back in the Eighties. It was dreadful from start to finish. We stayed at a beach hotel that was zero rated as far as I was concerned. The rooms were dirty and the food and service were appalling. How I survived two weeks there I have no idea. Apart from the hotel, the locals weren’t very pleasant either.

And your worst experience on holiday?

I’ve been fortunate in never having had any bad experiences on holidays, other than the odd bit of missing luggage. However, what ruins it for me these days is the attitude of some airport security officials.

Recently, at Heathrow, I was in a queue behind an elderly couple in front of me who didn’t appear to be regular travellers and therefore didn’t understand some of the new rules. The lady was holding a small bottle of orange juice and an officious airport git came up to her and started reading her the riot act for having the bottle, despite the lady taking a drink to prove that it wasn’t a dangerous substance.

I felt sorry for them and intervened before the old lady passed out with nervous exhaustion. I appreciate that we need security, however a little tact and diplomacy would go a long way.

What’s the biggest packing mistake you’ve made?

During my Blue Peter days, I was packing to go on a trip to Argentina. It was a beautiful warm summer’s day and the sun must have got to me because I packed the wrong choice of clothes, even though I was aware that it was winter in Argentina. Needless to say, it was freezing in the southern hemisphere and I ended up having to wear several layers of clothes to make up for my mistake.

What do you avoid on holiday?

Anything that says, ''English Breakfast sold here’’. I can never understand why people go abroad and want to have an English breakfast when they get there. Surely you go abroad to experience different cultures and the local food, otherwise why bother?

What do you hate about holidays?

The humidity in hot climates plays havoc with my hair. Other than that, I hate the drudgery of returning from holiday to the normal routine, not to mention the unpacking, washing and mountain of post that has to be dealt with. I try to deal with my emails on holiday to avoid them building up while I’m away.
