    Which was your best holiday?

When I was seven, I went with my sisters to stay with our grandparents in their lovely white house in Tangier. I remember the people who lived next door - Mr and Mrs Sinclair.

Mrs Sinclair had enormous blue eyes and would walk around her strawberry garden in long dresses. She used to invite us over for strawberry parties. Anyway, there are two lots of seaside in Tangier: the Med side, which is rather flat and boring, and the Atlantic side, with its dangerous tides and deserted beaches.

On high days and holidays we would go to the Atlantic side, where the bleating of the goats on the surrounding hills and the crashing of the waves were the only sounds. I would get completely lost walking along those beaches gathering shells.

And the best hotel you've stayed in?

Probably one of the most charming was a tiny little family-run hotel in Ipsos before Corfu became what it is now. It was just after I'd finished filming Tom Jones in 1963. The hotel was very simple - running hot water was someone running in with a kettle - and the people were lovely.

What do you need for a perfect holiday?

Sun - I do love sun - and a really good companion who has a sense of adventure and exploration. I don't need luxury or anything like that.

What do you always take with you?

My laptop and a good book. It used to be my voluminous journal, but I've graduated to a laptop. I'm always in the middle of writing something.

What's your best piece of travel advice?

Travel light. A very light suitcase or bag and clothes that you can crumple up - crinkly ones that fold into nothing. Plus a pair of jeans or trousers and something pretty, but light and small. If you do end up in a luxury hotel, you can hang everything up when you're in the shower and the creases will fall out.

Where do you want to go next?

I really want to go to South America: Peru and Brazil and then to Uruguay to see a writer friend of mine.

I went round Mexico in the 1960s with a hammock and a couple of smock dresses and just fell in love with the air, landscapes and ruins.
    ... and disasters?

Which was your worst experience on holiday?

The beginning of a three-month backpacking holiday around Turkey looked pretty rotten when we fetched up in Istanbul and it was snowy, icy and pelting with rain. I hadn't brought any clothes to cope with cold or rain.

I remember running round the markets looking for a mac or umbrella. I ended up in a DIY shop buying a bin liner, which I then cut holes in and wore. It was a dismal start, but I headed south and things improved.

What's the biggest packing mistake you've made?

In the early days, I packed a couple of dresses and a pair of shorts, as I mostly went on summer holidays. In the middle years, I started packing too much because holidays were combined with film festivals. Now I've gone back to underpacking - I don't like taking lots of stuff.

Which is the worst hotel you've stayed in?

When I was in Turkey, we didn't really stay in hotels - occasionally we slept out at a ruin or in a tent - but we did stay in some pretty rum rooms.

What do you avoid on holiday?

I'm not looking for my fellow countrymen or women on holiday - or sharks. I haven't had a bad experience, but the whole idea of sharks… oh, they terrify me.

What do you hate about holidays?

What I love about holidays, particularly when you're an actor, is knowing that you've got a lovely bit of work to come back to on your return. The worst thing is when you haven't and you don't know what you're coming back to, and you feel as though you really shouldn't go away.
