Arrow Reasons to quit smoking

Reduce your risk of lung cancer

According to the Lung Cancer Alliance, lung cancer accounts for 26 percent of cancer deaths among women as compared to 3 percent fifty years ago. Though smoking isn’t the only cause of lung cancer (nonsmokers also develop the disease), the American Lung Association reports that 87 percent of lung cancer cases are directly related to the habit.

Reduce your risk of other cancers
Besides reducing your risk of lung cancer, kicking the habit also decreases your risk of developing other smoking-related cancers. Smoking is a major cause of lung, larynx, mouth, throat, bladder and esophageal cancers. Smoking is also linked to cancers of the cervix, pancreas, kidney, stomach and some types of leukemia.

Improve your heart health

Smoking increases your risk of developing (and dying of) heart disease and stroke. And the more cigarettes you smoke, the higher your risk. Even reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke per day can help protect your heart by improving your cholesterol levels and your blood’s ability to transport oxygen, according to a study in Nicotine & Tobacco Research. Kicking the habit for good delivers even more heart-health benefits.

Better your reproductive health

In the book The HPV Vaccine Controversy, author Dr Shobha S Krishnan warns that smoking can make existing HPV infections persist in the body and even cause HPV-related diseases (like cervical cancer) because smoking weakens the immune system. Using tobacco can also decrease fertility and raise the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth.

Have a healthy pregnancy and baby

Women who smoke not only increase their risk of fertility problems, they also put their pregnancy and babies in danger. Smoking has been linked to infant death, low birthweight and even sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Further, the January 2009 issue of Pediatrics reports that children exposed to tobacco smoke and lingering toxic particles can develop cognitive and psychological problems such as ADHD.

Keep your teeth

A 2008 study in BMC Public Health indicates that current smokers are significantly more likely to lose their teeth than former smokers or nonsmokers 20 to 38 years old. Smoking and chewing tobacco can lead to serious gum disease, not to mention yellow teeth (of those you don’t lose) and bad breath.

Improve your digestive health

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, smoking can affect all parts of the digestive system, contributing to such common disorders as heartburn and peptic ulcers. Smoking also increases the risk of Crohn's disease, and possibly gallstones, which form when liquid stored in the gallbladder hardens into pieces of stone-like material. Smoking can even damage your liver and put you at risk for cancer of the esophagus, stomach and kidneys.

Stay beautiful

Smoking negatively affects every cell of your body, including those of your skin. Smoking not only dehydrates your skin (increasing your risk of premature wrinkles), it also depletes it of essential nutrients. Smoking takes its toll on your liver and kidneys -- your body’s natural detoxifiers -- reducing their ability to rid your body of pollutants (including those caused by tobacco).

Be a good role model

Want your children or younger relatives to die young? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 23 percent of high school students and 8 percent of middle school students smoke. Even though your children may hear or read that smoking is hazardous to their health, they are going to look to you for guidance. If you quit smoking, you reinforce that smoking is a poor choice for long-term health as well as show them that you care enough about them (and yourself) to be well and alive as they grow up and eventually have kids of their own.

Live longer

Quitting smoking will lengthen your life and improve its quality -- and rather quickly, at that. A May 2008 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that 61 percent of the full benefit of quitting in regard to coronary heart disease mortality and 42 percent of the full benefit of quitting smoking in regard to cerebrovascular deaths were realized within the first five years of kicking the habit. Quitting smoking also decreases your risk of developing other chronic health conditions and improves the chances you will recover from those you do happen to get.
