PUNARJANAM of Superhits!! - Bolly Originals And Their Remakes
![]() PUNARJANAM of Superhits!! Comparing Bolly originals and their remakes It seems the successive box-office failure of remakes have not dampened the spirits of Bolly daddies, who are ever-present with their "tributes" to the era bygone. Taking cue from the richly mounted 'Devdas', the elegantly shot 'Parineeta' and the prodigal retake of 'Sholay', Himesh Reshammiya's latest weave, titled "Karzzzz', would hit the screens on October 17. On the cards are a number of ambitious remakes of yesteryear classics. Here is a comparison of a few classics with their "tributes". |

![]() Devdas Bimal Roy's 'Devdas' (1955) Devdas is the story of a young man who is happy to be sad. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote it, and later disowned it saying, "I wrote it when I was drunk". Bimal Roy dusted it up and called in Dilip Kumar (who else!) to breath life into the alcoholic. Yusuf Saab did it with pathos quintessential, and mouthed such gems as 'Ek choti si bhool ki itni badi saza?!', 'Arre tum kyon ro rahi ho, tum to Paro nahin ho' and 'Kaun Kambaqt gham bhulaane ke liye peeta hai? Main to peeta hoon ke saans le sakoon'. When he was not into such fab one-liners, Dilip Kumar was seen scaling the depths of underacting, to such an extent that he looked deadpan at times. Bimal Roy's 'Devdas' was not a huge hit like P C Barua's 'Devdas' (Bimal Roy had done the camera work for that one). Nevertheless, it ran for 15 weeks at Roxy, Bombay. SLB's 'Devdas' (2002) Sanjay Leela Bhansali took Devdas to a 'Mughal-e-azam' set and made him live, love, sing, dance and die there. Shah Rukh Khan replaced Dilip Kumar—Bathos replaced Pathos! Instead of brooding at Devdas's plight, Bhansali cheered himself up and flushed one colour after another into each frame. Ably assisted by music director Ismail Durbar and choreographer Saroj Khan, Devdas literally danced to Bhansali's tunes! The film, made at a budget of Rs. 500,000,000, was a reasonable hit at the B.O. Potshot: Dilip Kumar's Devdas looked as if he was drinking to live! SRK's Devdas looked as if he was living to drink!!! |

![]() Sholay Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay' (1975) Two petty thieves are hired by a vengeful ex-cop to bring a monster dacoit to books. The highest grossing Indian movie of all time, 'Sholay' earned Rs. 2,36,45,00,000, (after adjusting for inflation). It was declared a commercial disaster, on the day of release. Reviewers of the day called it "dead ember", and "a gravely flawed attempt". 'Sholay' ran for five years straight at Minerva, Bombay. Thematically, 'Sholay' was influenced by Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns; it flagged off a new Indian movie genre, known as "The Curry Western". Ram Gopal Varma ki 'Aag' (2007) One reviewer titled his review "Ram Gopal Varma ka Ahankaar". A disaster on all fronts, 'RGV ki Aag' went on to become one of the greatest flops in the history of Indian Cinema. In a bizarre role reversal, Amitabh Bachchan played a nutty Gabbar Singh (Babban Singh) and suffered a major B.O. setback. The remake was pulled out of the theatres after two weeks! Potshot: "Those who like my 'Aag' are mentally deranged", said RGV. What more is there to say? |

![]() Parineeta Bimal Roy's 'Parineeta' (1953) Again, based on a Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay book. (Thankfully, he was not "drunk", this time.) Directed by Bimal Roy, the film starred Ashok Kumar as Shekhar Rai, Meena Kumari as Lolitha and Asitbaran as Girish. Written by Moni Bhattacharjee and Sarat Chandra Chatterji, the movie was truly a Bengali affair, except for the casting of Meena Kumari. Pradeep Sarkar's 'Parineeta' (2005) The target audience of the new age 'Parineeta' could well have been unaware of the Bimal Roy take let alone the Sarat Chandra genesis! Pradeep Sarkar packaged it in such a way that both the Sarat Chandra fan and the Hard Rock freak walked out of the theatre with a smile. Set in 1962 Calcutta (nine years post the Bimal Roy take), the movie starred Saif Ali Khan as Shekhar Rai, Vidya Balan as Lolita and Sanjay Dutt as Girish. Potshot: Mushy original; Mast remake! |

![]() Don Chandra Barot's 'Don' (1978) The super hit tale of the lovable ignoramus who is forced to play a Don, "jinka pakadna mushqil hi nahin naamumkin hai".Has one of the most loved theme strains in the history of Indian cinema. Was instrumental in building the Amitabh Bachchan enigma. Technically sound, for the day! Farhan Akhtar's 'Don' (2007) The slick version of the old story. A tweak in the end: Bad triumphs over the Good. SRK looks good as Don but falters as the Pan Banareswala. Excellently shot action and chase sequences. Critics compared B and SRK and arrived at conflicting reviews. The remake is a hit, if not a super hit. Potshot: Don ko pakadna naamumkin nahin, mushqil zaroor hai!!! |

![]() Umrao Jaan Muzaffar Ali's 'Umrao Jaan' (1981) Based on Mirza Hadi Ruzwa's Urdu Novel, 'Umrao Jaan Ada' (1905), this Muzaffar Ali movie told the story of a famous Lucknow courtesan. Rekha played the protagonist. Farooq Sheikh played Umrao Jaan's lover, Nawab Sultan; Raj Babbar played Faiz Ali, the dashing bandit who woos her. The box office turnout was average, but the movie was praised for its historic accuracy. Rekha won the national award for the Best actress. All the Khaiyyam songs were super hits. JP Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' (2006) Aishwarya Rai plays the character here. Abhishek Bachchan plays Nawab Sultan and Sunil Shetty plays the dacoit. The remake looked good on posters. On the screen, it looked pale. Aishwarya couldn't carry the character well; all the effort went into "How to look beautiful", and the emotional content got lost in Set excesses. Potshot: Ab jo kiye ho, Dutta, aisa na Keejo!!! |

![]() Karz Subhash Ghai's 'Karz' (1980) Inspired from the 1975 American film, 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud', Subhash Ghai made the record-breaking 'Karz', starring Raj Kiran, Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Simi Garewal. The climactic song sequence ('Ek Haseena Thi') was greatly influenced by the climax of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. The theme song was, according to many critics, "a direct copy of George Benson's "We As Love". Sathish Kaushik's 'Karzzzz' (2008) Himesh Reshammiya comes in as the reincarnated avenger. The movie is scheduled to hit the theatres on October 17, 2008. Potshot: It's a hair-weaving marvel! |

![]() Dostana Raj Khosla's 'Dostana' (1980) Tells the story of two bosom friends who are gay (as explained in Dr. Johnson's dictionary) and good, till they meet a girl. It is the tale of triangular love turned sour. Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha vied with each other as they poured their hearts out for Sheetal (played by Zeenat Aman). Tanun Mansukhani's 'Dostana' (2008) The plot is almost the same, except for the fact that the story is set in Miami, and that the male protagonists, played by Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, are supposedly gay (as is used on the latest Tee)! Potshot: "Now laugh and be gay, to the woods away! And there, my babe; we'll live for aye": William Wordsworth |

![]() Amar, Akbar, Anthony Manmohan Desai's 'Amar, Akbar, Anthony' (1978) Three brothers (played by Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor) lose and find themselves. Manji's tribute to secularism. The classic pop flick challenges all medical norms in a scene where three men donate their blood simultaneously to a recipient (incidentally, their mother). Doubting Thomases would be fed to Manmohan classics such as 'Mard'! 'A3' was one of the greatest hits of the 1970s. David Dhawan's 'Amar, Akbar, Anthony' (in the pipeline) In what can become one of the biggest casting disasters in history, Amar, Akbar and Anthony would be played by Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. David Dhawan can expect himself to rewrite Hilarity (if not history). Potshot: Question: Who will be the heroine in David Dhavan's 'A3'? Ans: Dil bhi hai khali, Dimaag bhi hai khali, is mein rahegi koi kismat ki maari!!! |

Remakes in the making! Pritish Nandy has reportedly acquired the rights to remake Shakti Samantha's 'Howrah Bridge', 'Amar Prem' and 'Barsaat Ki Ek Raat'. He is also planning an animated version of 'Sholay' and remakes of 'Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam' and 'Devdas'. Sanjay Dutt is toying with the idea of remaking 'Padosan', a comedy from the late 60s, starring Sunil Dutt, Kishore Kumar and Saira Banu. Remakes of Feroz khan's 'Qurbani' and Amitabh's 'Satte Pe Satta' are also being planned. |
