Why Bhagat Singh Should Be Given The Due Place In Indian History

Shaheed Bhagat Singh is one of the most recognizable figures from the era of freedom fighters. Countless movies and plays have been made on Bhagat Singh and his story still continues to capture the imagination of the youth of the nation. Along with Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh is the only person who instills in us a strong feeling of patriotism. But sadly, his contribution to the Indian Independence Movement has not been given the kind of appreciation it deserves. Historians have held conflicting views, from some calling him a terrorist while others call him the greatest martyr. It is time our history books give him his due credit and here are the reasons why.

6. He Was Completely Dedicated to the Fight for Freedom

From a very early age, Bhagat Singh showed complete dedication towards the fight for freedom. He read about the Russian Revolution and was inspired by writers such as Lenin, Tolstoy, Karl Marx and Mikhail Bakunin.
He lost faith in religion and became an atheist and dedicated his life to his country. When his parents tried to force him to marry, he ran away from home as he didn’t want any temptations or responsibilities that would hinder his purpose of fighting for the independence of India.

5. He Showed Incredible Resolve at a Very Young Age

The kind of resolve he showed in his fight for freedom is commendable and this alone should earn him a bigger place in Indian history. Sometimes he’s portrayed as a hot blooded youth who went the wrong way in his vanity but that’s not the case at all.
He was an intelligent young man who knew exactly what he was doing and believed in the reasons behind his actions. To show such maturity and understanding at such a young age and also to stand behind one’s ideals is something that should encourage every young man today.

4. He Encouraged the Idea of Total Independence

The Indian National Congress had been negotiating a gradual independence in which they would agree for dominion status for a while and then apply for total freedom but it was because of revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh and Bose that the Indian psyche started believing that they could get total independence and that too in just a few years.

3. He Became Extremely Popular

His popularity after the murder of Saunders reached an all time high as people were anxious to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. After his arrest and trial in the Assembly Bombing case, he became one of the most popular figures of the Indian independence movement.
His death caused such an impact that people protested against Gandhi for a while. A man of such recognition deserves more than what he’s got in today’s history books.

2. He Accepted Responsibility for His Actions

All of his critics point to his actions and call them acts of terrorism. But the fact is that he took responsibility for his actions and willingly surrendered to the police. He knew that his death would bring the whole nation together and he was eager to give his life for the nation.
His actions might have been violent and wrong on principal but he took them for a reason and didn’t try to run away from the consequences. In fact he took those actions to face those consequences as he knew that he would get a great platform to spread his ideas throughout India.

1. His Death Inspired the Youth and Mobilized the Nation

The trial and hanging of the three, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, was such a botched up affair that it enraged the whole nation. The trial was a mockery in which judgment was announced even without the presence of the accused.
The hanging was done hurriedly in absence of any magistrate and their bodies were cremated in the darkness of the night. This vengeful and unjust act of the British government became the spark that lit a fire through out the nation. All leaders condemned the way their case was handled and the youth of the nation was inspired and mobilized to fight for total independence from the British.
